Mirotone has closed and I've been left to hang out and dry.
I am a bit of an outlier I guess as I've used the Mirotone water base sealer and topcoat now for some 15 years or so.and
have found both to be excellent products. I've finished and refinished many guitars using these wonderful substances.
The infatuation of just about every other luthier has with high VOC finishes is well known. Unfortunately neither my health nor my workspace is able accommodate the highly toxic glow of thinners based products. In fact without a registered spray booth it is illegal to use it. Respect for my neighbors also precludes the dubious joys of spraying cellulous VOC based lacquers. Generating clouds of highly toxic chemicals that float off into my neighbours living areas is not a goer for me.
Just wondering is there any one at all out there either using or experimenting with using Water Base finishes?
Looking at Durobond WB finishes but as yet .,unconvinced.

Re: Mirotone demise and WB lacquer
I use Target Coatings EM2000 which is a water based oil varnish emulsion. I brush it on, but you can spray it. Have been using it in it's various guises for at least 20 years. It is an American product, I have not found anything equivalent locally, so is difficult and expensive to import. However, it is worth the effort and expense. Stew Mac used to stock it, but no longer which is a real bummer. As with anything different, there will be a learning curve to get the best results from it, or from any other product for that matter. I get it through shipito.com. If you want to follow it up I have documented my finishing procedure on my web site - https://petercoombe.com/publications/jaamim11.htm

I was told yesterday that a company called Superior coatings is about to start making a full range of lacquers. Apparently the information came from a sales rep, so for the moment it’s just hearsay. Wayne
