It’s not your fault but

Post by TallDad71 » Wed Nov 18, 2020 9:59 pm

Why has no one ever mentioned this tool before?

Just bought a thicknessing wedge, about $60, link below, to replace my stew Mac feeler gauges. For decades I have been lifting feelers up in different combinations to ascertain string clearances over frets to complete setups but no more.

Now I simply wedge up to the plucked string until it stops ringing and read off the distance.

Has anyone used this themselves, why didn’t you shout about them I wonder?

Yeah,

I've wondered this myself. I thought to buy one the other day (here in Melbourne), but the cheapest I could find (in a shop) was around $230, so I gave up the idea!

$230 sounds a bit steep. Mine was £34, which, because of BrexiDIOTS, is probably close to $34 now

Glad to see there are cheaper alternatives Trevor.

You can also make your own for about 10 cents.
You can get as accurate as want by by making it longer and using a shallow angle.
After cutting the wedge I just measured it with my dial caliper and marked it.

Show off! 😀🤣😝

It’s another simple but great idea. I may just make another one that’s a little shorter and just does measurements in the range I need for string clearances.

Aww,

I made a mistake!

https://www.bscindustrial.com.au/taper-gauge-0.3-4mm

The taper gauge I looked at was priced at $282.76. It seems that they must have been "flying out the window" at that price, because there are now none left!

I KNEW I should have bought one while I had the chance.

For those in Europe this well known Berlin based shop https://www.fine-tools.com/messkeil.html (Dieter Schmidt) has a variety of gauges including the one Trevor mentioned @ 10.95 Euros incl vat. and a slightly cheaper version of the same one in ABS. There is also a Starrett gauge more like Jim's for 99 euros. However it maxes out at 4mm.
