SIX STRING UKULELE HELP

Hi Group,

I am building a six string uke for a guy and not having seen one, let alone played one, I'm not sure what spacing i should set the two pair of octave strings at the nut and saddle.

I have already stuffed up once by placing the tuner holes in a slight fan formation on the headstock.....WRONG so I'm getting a little nervous about stuffing something else up.

Your octave or unison pairs will be from 2.0 to 2.5mm spacing at nut and saddle. Depends on the tension of the strings, their diameter and player preference etc.

Yes, you have to be careful with those tuner positions. Very easy to get it wrong and have a string riding against the post of the one closer to the nut.

I always do a full scale drawing of any new headstock shape or tuner configuration just to check on any clashes between string and hardware. It's a lot less destructive to use a rubber than a drill.
That top looks like it'll really pop under a coat of jam Daryl, looking forward to seeing the finished pics.

Yeah good call Nick. I didnt even give it a thought until a musician friend who had played my previous uke builds advised me to watch my machine head placement for the six string. As I had already shaped the headstock and drilled the holes, I had to remove the laminate, plug the holes, add material to the bottom of the headtock, reshape, redrill relaminate......whew!
