New member and first post- les paul repair

Post by Welly workshop » Thu Oct 17, 2024 3:37 pm

Hi team good to be here.
I'm Richard from Wellington, NZ.
I've started a guitar repair and build business here, due to the job situation, and it's going quite well.
I've been asked to repair a broken Epiphone Les Paul headstock (what a surprise 😆)
Just wondered if I should expect to need to level the frets once I've fixed the break?
My gut says yes, as the shock will have moved at least the head end frets, but I was looking to lean into the group experience and wisdom.
I've not seen my patient yet, I'm thinking about what my repair estimate should include.
Thanks all

Richard

Welcome to the forum Richard.

Ideally I wouldn't be supplying any written quote without first seeing the instrument. If that's not possible then provide a quote for the headstock repair without fret job and make it clear that some fretwork may be necessary upon you inspecting the instrument and provide a quote for extra cost of same.

Thanks Martin,
Essentially the line I've taken. I've now seen the damage, it's quite a long split,so very fixable. I talked about the potential for fret work and it needs a new nut.
The owner is both relieved it can be fixed and happy to trust me.
Good result and grateful for the work.
Cheers
Richard

Hi Richard, and welcome. I am glad to hear that it is working out for you so far. Starting a new business venture is pretty demanding. Good luck with it.

Hi Richard, and welcome. As I am outside of any sizable town, a lot of my job requests come via email with a photo, sometimes many photos. Just the other day I had a request where the photo showed the area to be repaired, too easy. However, I told the customer that it could be misleading to estimate only on a photo. The reason is that I cannot see what other damage there may be, and what may have caused the failure in the first place. I always advise a bench check before I can give a closer estimation of the cost.
Good luck with your venture. Taff
