Gibson Restoration...

[Taffy Evans]

I had a request to repair this old Gibson from an elderly lady whose husband had passed away. It was his guitar, and he had done extensive repairs on it over the years. He also painted the guitar with brown paint, to hide the repairs. Luckily most of the damage was on the sides but filled with a putty type of filler.
The inside was generously patched with timber of varying shapes and sizes and looked very old. All these were removed along with the puttied-up repairs and replaced with matching mahogany patches, bent to match the side curves. One of the original repairs looked stable and presentable enough to leave visible, so I left this one to show a connection to the guitar and repairs by the lady’s husband. She was very happy with this move.
The last photo shows a row of plugged holes, not plugged by me, in the back and the same places in the top, and I can’t think why.
Anyway, the photos will tell the story… I hope.

Hi Al, thanks for visiting and the nice comments. Yes, it has been a while since we met up. I enjoy our discussions on building design and the outcomes we achieve.....or not. Other than my son you are the only other builder I know, not know about, but know to speak to.

My son visited the other week, he lives in Adelaide, and it was great to spend time sharing ideas about techniques and theories. We improved my workshop vacuum cleaner into a cyclone dust collector, the project, and the required parts I had stored for two years waiting for inspiration. We also discussed the motorized radius dish machine I was building, it was not finished but lots of good ideas flowed from sharing thoughts.

Visits to Town have been dedicated to hospital appointments at the moment. I have a new build to show you, a '000', I'm pretty happy with it. catch up soon.
