Where has everyone gone?

This forum (on "the book") used to be a lively place. Now it can be weeks between posts. I've posted some things that should be of interest to those who have the book, and, save for Trevor (thanks, Trevor!), I haven't gotten a single comment.

So where have the "left-brained" people gone? Where can one discuss the science and engineering of acoustic guitars?

I hear you Greg and do read your posts. I did actually have a look at a few of those spreadsheets but need to set aside a few hours to go through them in detail. I've just been a bit busy of late and right now I'm laid low with a cold.

Yes the forum has been quiet of late. Bob who started the forum was much more hands on with his running of the forum and was more active with his building than I am at present. Unfortunately Jeremy and myself found ourselves running the forum at short notice when Bob had to quit building for health reasons. We are currently discussing a few changes to the team running the forum....more on that when it eventuates.

Anyway..please dont let the lack of posts from others put you off posting your comments......theyre appreciated by myself and many others even if we dont make it obvious.

I just joined the forum, after having found there is not much discussion regarding contemporary acoustic guitar design in my home country.
We have a long tradition in instrument building in the traditional way. But I am quite alone , now building this country's first sets of falcate braced guitars. (by the way, my lutherie instructor says the has played quite a few good acoustics during his career, like Bourgeois etc, and this falcate braced live back instrument is so far the best and lively guitar he ahs seen, so I guess I will continue on this path...)

Have been reading through your posts thoroughly and also have been utilizing the excel sheets already in my builds. Very valuable thanks! Will be posting and joining the discussion when I further proceed in my next builds.

Thanks for putting up all those spreadsheets Greg. I think its an amazing thing to do. But then again, I have to google how to use vlookup every couple of years or so when I have to use it.

I've saved them all for closer inspection later but I will definitely be delving into the compensation sheet. I had put the compensation portion of the book into the 'come back to that later' bucket and 7 years later and your sheet has put it back on the agenda.

Actually, I think its great that this forum and ancient threads reactive in waves as new people discover the forum and bring a new wave of enthusiasm and ideas. When I was in my corporate life I would spend an embarrassing amount of time reading through threads. Now it takes a bit of insomnia to start reading through 6 months of 'unread posts'.

Most days I approve at least a couple of new members to the forum. Most of them never post anything.

If everyone joining the forum just put up one post introducing themselves I'm sure the forum would be a lot "busier".

I wonder about this same issue in the U.S. Where did everybody go? Those of us who have been in lutherie the last 30-40years have grown accustomed to having a lutherie community with organizations like A.S.I.A. and the Guild of American Luthiers in the U.S., and I assume other countries had some sorts of lutherie groups. Oahu had a fairly active uke organization, the Ukulele Guild of Hawaii., and we had one with upwards of 50 members, the Big Island Ukulele Guild, on the island I live on, Hawaii Island. The Ukulele Guild of Hawaii has disappeaed into the ozone, and our Big Island Guild has also died. Both of the Hawaii groups died due to lack of leadership. A lot of us who did the leg work to get things going have aged out and there appears to be little youthful interest, which is what is needed to extend active organixations.We have all recently seen the demise of LMI and much of the Guild of American Luthier's leadership
They say history is cyclical. It all comes around again! I'm 78 and I can only hope to live to see the biginning a new era of luthrie madness! I have certainly enjoyed the ride. Maybe not the sanding! Enjoy your building.
