Places to visit in New York
Places to visit in New York
A friend of mine is visiting New York shortly and was asking me if I knew of any guitar shops or other guitar related places he should visit. Any ideas would be most welcome.

The Guitar Center in South Manhattan is worth a visit even if just to have a look at the wall of Les Pauls. They have some vintage stuff as well.
Mandolin Brothers on Staten Island is about to close unless someone new takes it on. Might be worth a final look. According to the website you have to make an appointment so it looks like they're scaling down. At least the ferry ride's free.
Rudy's, Matt Umanovs.
Not guitar related but BB Kings Jazz Club runs a Sunday Brunch with the Harlem Gospel Choir which is highly recommended.
Cheers

A mate who has been told me the Steinway factory tour is reason enough to visit NY.

Definitely Mandolin Brothers. One of my favourite shops in the whole world. I didn't know they were possibly closing until I saw Bob's post. So Stan Jay (proprietor) died - very sad. He was a lovely, and funny guy. It looks like they are trying to sell the whole business. Martin, how cashed up is your friend?
Get him to pick up this collection of original D'Angelico carving molds and a half-finished neck for an archtop inlaid with D'Angelico's brand (Nick - you are going to want this).

Read a great story awhile back Martin bout Ed Cassidy buying some drumsticks from Mannys' with his stepson a young Randy California in tow who was banging away on a strat when one of the 'Grand Masters' (some say the Grand Master)of the strat and a regular customer at the store, on the same day heard his noodling and offered him an evening gig on the spot which lasted for 2 weeks. Pretty neat for the 13/14 year old school kid.
