Four Flute Router Cutter

Post by Dave M » Thu Dec 10, 2015 7:28 am

I recently discovered this cutter. It cuts incredibly smoothly and made me feel much safer removing the overhangs of the top and backs on my just closed box.

It is a half inch spindle so is quite a chunky bit with bearings top and bottom, but given the smooth operation it doesn't feel too frightening.

Carbitool may have such a cutter...it's where I get most of my router cutters.

Mark I am in the UK so this is probably not too useful for you. For interest from the UK I bought it at Wealdens Tool company. You have to search their site a bit as they keep it hidden away.

It may be that these are not that uncommon but I have only just come across them, and the double bearing cutters also seem a bit hard to find.

OK. I think I will get myself one of those. I recently made up something similar by adding a bottom bearing to one that only had a top bearing. But this looks better. And you can never have too many router bits!

Thanks for the link.

Nice looking cutters but at 47 pounds plus postage on top of that......the Carbitool cutters will work out cheaper for Australian customers.

no doubt. Would probably work out three times as expensive!
Also this one is 2 inches long rather than 1 - 1 1/2 inches from Carbitool. You blokes might not need that much but I do when doing solid bodies :)

I bought a few router bits from MLCS in the USA (when the Aussie Dollar was better), including a 2" long double bearing flush trim bit from their premium "Katana" range. It is only 2 flute but is really good quality. See link

Man, I know what you mean about frightening. I HATE my 1 1/2" long trim bit. Sure, it cuts well enough, but it also tears out pretty fast. Scares the heck out of me.

Do the extra 2 cutting edges make it smoother?

Pete it does feel smoother but I suppose you could in theory just run a two cutter bit faster to get the same result.
A lot of how it feels must be about how well the bit is balanced and maybe I just got lucky that this one is sharpened to a small tolerance. It is also new of course which helps.

I guess a proper engineer could tell us a lot about optimum speeds, type of cutter etc, which I am not!

Cheers Dave

Keeping the cutter sharp helps as well. I give the the backside of the flutes a dress with a diamond card sharpener after each use.
