Carbon Fibre bracing without wood

Post by Dave M » Fri May 15, 2015 6:16 am

I was asked this question and don't really know the answer:

Could we use just CF reinforced resin as braces without the timber at all?

I realise we wouldn't have much height to give the I beam affect but the stuff is so enormously stiff do we need it? I can imagine forming at least small triangular shapes with the fibre.

The epoxy is dense so we would need to pack lots of fibre in per weight of resin.

Is this totally ridiculous? What do you think?

Yep .... use one of these https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5wjjDBdgeE

and it's probably a ridiculous amount of money now, but who knows in a few years we might all be printing CF braces.

Cheers,
Paul .

Just make the top out of CF and then you wont need bracing :P

You could, but composite braces would be lower mass for the same stiffness.

I am assuming you are saying a composite (CF and wood) brace would be stiffer for the weight.

I love the idea and thought process of going new paths like carbon fibre braces, exciting times for guitar building IMO.
