feast watson prooftint stain colours no longer available :(

Post by old_picker » Mon Dec 15, 2014 2:17 pm

several of my favorite F&W prooftint stains are just not on the shelves any more
the range of colours has shrunk to 10 or so generic rather drab looking colours
pity anyone one who wants to mix up their own colour brew which was quite possible with the old range of stain colours
eg there used to be red, blue, green, rosewood plus quite a few more and you could add a little this n that in different ratios and produce a very wide range of colours - you could use them to match a colour on a repair job

anyone know of a brand that does have a decent range of colours?
need to be spirit based so i can mix them in lacquer

StewMac have the Colortone range of stains which mix with ANY medium! With water to apply direct to the wood & with laquer, poly or nitro to apply over the wood. They're colour fast too so no probs with fading and the colours they offer can be mixed into any shade or colour. There doesn't seem to be any problems with shipping them overseas either.

What about these guys.
Not sure if they will have what you are after but they're Aussie based which is good.

i am familiar with u-beaut and have a collection of their water base dyes which are excellent
doubt they would mix with lacquer very well

also in response to nick's post - yes there is always stewmac - i am resisting the temptation to buy their stains - there is enough woodcraft going on in australia for their to be a reasonable range of spirit based stains available
- i am even thinking of making some myself -

cabots do have a decent range of colours but their stains are in their words"oil enriched" which puts them off my list altogether

Can you use aniline dye Ray, you can get that from the Wood Works Book and Tool mob. It mixes well with metho, no idea how it goes with lacquer though.
Life is good when you are amongst the wood.

Ray I use the Feast Watson stuff myself and i know what you mean about the reduction in available colours, I have bought paint off these guys for over 20 years and I used to get a lot of dyes off them a few years back, all sorts of colours. No problems with thinner based paints, used them extensively in Nitro. Speak to Brad, great guy to deal with, cheers Paul

Orasol powdered dyes are terrific and very lightfast. They mix with many solvents. I use them in shellac mostly.
