Adirondack spruce

Post by chappy » Wed Dec 03, 2014 10:27 pm

Hi all,

Not too sure of the numbers of Australian luthiers who have used this supplier:

Old Standard Wood or http://www.adirondack.com

They supply Adi Spruce to a lot of major US of A guitar makers. I used a soundboard of Adi Spruce on a ukulele which resulted in a nice tone and finish. I was after more tops so I contacted this company for a small number and they were very obliging. Emails answered promptly and politely and could not do enough to help.

I received quality tonewood very well packed in about 7 days from the centre of the US of A.

Pretty good service all round.

Cheers

Alan

Googleing for "Old Standard Wood" http://www.adirondackspruce.com/ pops up. Must be this one I guess. :)

They are an excellent supplier. Their minimal grades, which I have purchased for 80 to 100 US Dollars are very nice. If you haven't worked with Adirondack top wood, it is typically very stiff (at least that I have gotten from this supplier). Also, this is the only shop that I get brace wood from. They sell premium adi brace wood by the pound and it is straight and about as close to perfect quarter as I have ever used. I got very tired of wasting so much brace wood from my common suppliers, I gave up, until I found these guys. They are very customer focused as well and will answer the phone when you call and are glad to help you out.

I'd build with Adirondack all the time if I could, just love the stuff. Thanks for the link, I don't think I'd come across them before.

Here is another one I don't know about shipping because I am in the US. Nice guys and if you don't mind compression wood they have some great deals.

They cut from hand split billits to minimize run out. This includes their least expensive sets Their higher grade top sets are excellent. I actually like the look of compression wood so I go for the lower grade sets.

.

Agreed. I have used it a fair bit in mandolins and the one I play in the band has an Adirondack top. Nothing else can deliver the volume when you need to play really loud to be heard. The latest guitar I made is Adirondack (from RcTonewoods) and Indian Rosewood and it is a monster, so I intend to keep using it. With the Aussie $ heading south, good Adirondack is not only difficult to find, but is getting expensive.
