Zebra wood?
Zebra wood?
I just bought a chunk of Zebrano off eBay for $70. 1m long, 235mm wide and 26mm thick. Great quarter. Just wondering what I'll do with it in the end. Is it suitable for acoustics? or is it best reserved for some electrics down the road?
I did a search here and found references to one guitar built, by Hippety Hop, but only one partial photo...
Couple pix. I couldn't resist it, as it looks almost perfect.... As always, thanks for any opinions.....

Re: Zebra wood?
Great buy Nick
I am currently building an 8 string baritone with zebra wood. It cost me $100 for a set from a local guy. He purchased quite a few sets from the deceased estate of a Perth luthier (DeJago) years ago.
LMI and RC Tonewoods sell it, and liken it as an alternative to Indian Rosewood, however tap tone is not as good as IR.
It sands well, glues well and my pipe bent cutaway bent with ease. Glue is difficult to remove and the close grain appears as though grain filling may not be necessary for certain types of finishes.
I was going to use it on my recent Selmer mac but decided against it as it was an unknown.
Cheers Maurice

Re: Zebra wood?
I can see why you couldn't resist, nice wood you have there!
I cannot help as I've never used it but Maurie seems to have offered some educated advice above.

Nice buy Nick, seems a host of possibilities are open to you, I'd be going the acoustic route if you have enough for a B&S set.

Nice to hear in church but not in a Mexican prison.

Re: Zebra wood?
Cheers, guys. It just looked too cool to not at least try out.
I think I should be able to get five slices out of it, which ought to give me 2 Back and Side sets(OM or smaller) as well as a piece that would give at least a back and sides for a uke(maybe a top too). So I think the $80-odd investment, plus a bit to chop it up looks pretty reasonable now....

Re: Zebra wood?
I have a zebrano tenor uke with a spruce top and it sounds as good as it looks. Definitely suitable for an acoustic. Have fun with the build.
