So, what do you all think?

Post by nnickusa » Tue Jun 12, 2012 7:09 pm

#2, after one pore fill session, and wet with a coat of shellac for the next go.....I hope that will see her done. Close now, but not perfect, and I'm spraying this one with Mirotone3220 High Gloss, so I thought I'd make her look, as Christian says "like a licked lollypop"

Looks better than what I'm up to lately. I'm using Durobond guitar nitro, and it's damn near doing my freaking head in.

Why is it that I can build a reasonably nice guitar and then have to spend ages trying to get a good finish.

So what am I thinking? I'm thinking that yours looks pretty good, damn it. :?

Take heart mate........some of my French Polish jobs have lasted for months and in one case I stripped a top back to bare wood three times before I realised the problem was not the finish breaking up but nips from the Engleman sticking through the finish.

Hey Paul, What's the problem? Both Gerard and I shoot that stuff and find it really easy to use (which is why we use it). It's not the fastest to harden and it will bloom if sprayed at over 60% RH (but so does just about everything else), otherwise pretty straight forward. Let me know if I can help.

Thanks Trevor, I think the problem is that I didn't wait long enough for it to harden before trying to buff, I'm gonna let it sit for a few more weeks before having another go at buffing.

Paul,

The "wait before buff" time depends a lot on your drying environment. Mine get hung in the shade on the deck. Warm, with a light breeze blowing through. Minimum drying time is about a week in these conditions, which is probably equivalent to 2-3 weeks if hung in a dark, dank shed. Good airflow across the guitar accelerates things. There's no doubt that longer is better, but two weeks on the deck is as much as I ever feel I need.

If you hand buff using car polish compounds that have organic solvents in them (most do) the organics are absorbed by the finish, softening and expanding it again and taking you backwards. So if you did a conventional grain fill you will often see sink-back a couple of weeks after polishing out. If you did a full film fill with 105/107 (and let the epoxy fully harden before spraying [48 hours]) you don't get the differential film thickness of lacquer over pores and so don't get any, or at least much reduced, visible sink-back. If you go the conventional fill route, you're much better off buffing with a wheel if you don't want to see sunk pores. If you go that route, don't let the lacquer get hot under the wheel, or you go backwards again (differential expansion of different finish thicknesses over the pores).

Didn't get to the edit button in time...The resin mix above should have said 105/207 not 105/107. The 207 WEST hardener is the non-blooming special coatings hardener.
