The Improved Rosette Cutter

Hi, I'm new here .
Does this tool cut the rosette, or simply scribe the edges? If it actually cuts it, I'd love one - looks much simpler than a router.

It routes out the channel as well Peter.

There are 3 chippers sized from 1.0 to 3.0mm so far. Some further improvements have been made to the design. It's really working out to be a cracker of a hand tool.

We will be working on some video demonstrations. Watch this space for its availability.

Yes Peter it will cut scrape out the rosette channel. Been trying some different blade shapes to get the best but at this stage it was a bearing on the outboard side of the cutter which has made the most difference. This makes for a great depth stop for both the scribing blade and the scraper blade and gives a very positive feel to the tool.

As mentioned we decided to separate the rosette and binding components into 2 distinct tools. This was to not compromise either tool . So here is the new Gramil Tool for comment and critique.

I think I will offer one as a prize for a better name than "gramil". This appears to be Spanish for "marking gauge". At this stage my nickname for it is "The Holy Roller"

Just working through it all again to tweak the design and then we will get more serious.Not committing to a date as I would prefer to get some more feedback and make sure we get it right first time.It is up to the exciting stage though.

Hey Michael,
That binding cutter looks the goods to me. That's one aspect I'm still having trouble with. The binding on the back shoulders of mine got a bit thin when I cleaned them up. I made a couple different jigs for the dremel, but still had trouble. The one I made for the purfling and the rosettes were sweet, but I think your little tool would help me immensely to get the bindings right. How about "Bound and dragged"?

Looking really good there Micheal, certainly would give the user that feeling of substantial rather that flimsy! I like the double bearing idea, keeps the tool nice & parallel with the sides & the bearing on the rosette cutter is a great idea too, again it keeps the cutter perpendicular to the plane. I've bodged up various tools in the past to cut channels and binding ledges/grooves and found that this is one area you cannot skimp on 'solidness'. Needless to say my "quick & easy" tools didn't stay on my bench for too long!

The rosette cutter is looking great, the roller depth stop looks good.
Not sure about the gramil, should work well on the top grooves not sure whether the double bearing running on the top is a good idea for the sidecuts.

Jeff, Are you worried about the bearing marking the top?

I'm wondering if Jeff means that the two bearings running on the top would keep the cut parallel to the top and back, and at an open, obtuse, I think, though it's been a long time since HS geometry, angle, which would prevent the binding from sitting flush in the rabbet....Well, I was anyway

Maybe if the second bearing could be easily removed for the cuts on the sides it would enable a square rabbet...Have you tried it on a guitar/uke yet?

I have a suggestion for your consideration.
Below is a video of Romanillos using a circle cutter.
What I like about this cutter is that the left hand puts positive pressure directly above the center pin
And the end of the tool on the right hand has a handle above the center of gravity that helps to keep the hand safely above the soundboard.
Hope that makes sense.

Cut a 3mm wide rosette as an example today. Just to get your thoughts going. Cut from QLD Maple veneer which is 0.6mm thick .Very easy to do.

That looks neat and clean, Michael. Do you flip the cutter around for each side, or just adjust the radius?

When I buy one of these, or both, can I come to your house and get you to do the blade sharpening for me?

I flip the cutter around and adjust the radius so the vertical side of the blade is on the right side.
The blades are made from 18% Tungsten HSS so I doubt most people will ever have to sharpen them again but if you do it is quite easy just on your finest stone.

The bearings are 22mm from the single bearing. I am not going to bother trying to do the maths to work out what angle that would make to the side.

If your going past you can stop in for a look Nick . I do have some Gramil tools ready for sale and have cracked the angles on the blades for the rosette cutter now so will get into making a few soon.

Its next to the top while he is shaping braces at around 4.24 onwards.
