Cheers Steve, Its funny I had never seen a whatnot until I found this one on eBay. Thats probably not strictly true...I just hadn't noticed them before because I didn't know what one was. I picked it up in my regular search on eBay for BRW...now I have given one of my advanced Woodratting secrets away:)

I thought she was winding me up John but thats exactly what she called it and i'll bet all money it was rosewood as well.
Im into some rebirthing of tassie oak (not for guit though) at the moment but don't have the heart for sawing up peoples furniture in front of em..usually stop en route and with a few deft cuts wardrobes and tables with legs etc sit a lot nicer in my trailer.

You could be right there Steve, I am in the middle though as all the beautiful mahogany drop side tables seem to be in Melbourne:(

I think its nice you drive around the corner before you put their furniture to the sword! (saw-ed!)

I was given a bottle of rather nice port for my birthday recently. Unfortunately, it didn't last long. However, it came in a very nicely made pine box with the maker's brand burnt into it. I have no idea what type of pine it is but I did note that it was rather nicely quarter sawn and when joined has a reasonable tap tone. Long story short - a soundboard for a future project - probably a concert sized pineapple ukulele. Anybody able to narrow down the options for what sort of pine it might be?

Anybody able to narrow down the options for what sort of pine it might be?

Could possibly be Scots Pine (pinus sylvestris ) grows in Portugal and apparently is used for musical instruments.

I was driving around last week and spotted this on the side of the road,stopped and checked it out. solid Tas Myrtle. radiata drawer sides with Tas Radply drawer bottoms, that was about five days back.

I got the trailer out today and went to see if it was still there.
It was on the other side of the road with some legs broken off and a bit more water damage.
some Myrtle back and sides ? or a set of drawers to hold those large size plans is what I have been thinking could be made .

Free wood is good !

I can't match some of the stories you guys have just told, but I'm attaching a couple of pics of a tenor uke that I made recently. The back of it is spalted myrtle, salvaged from a 1970s bedhead thrown out in hard garbage a few years ago. It was three boards glued together. The top one, with the decorative edge cut into it, was pretty useless. Got a few uke sides and peghead overlays out of it though. The second board was 7.5" wide and had that quite nice pointed spalting pattern. It was resawn into two guitar backs (well, they require tiny ears if it's a dreanought you're after) and a uke set. The final board wasn't spalted but was lightly fiddlebacked and was resawn into sides for the above-mentioned instruments. Still haven't made a guitar out of it yet - not sure what myrtle sounds like. Any comments? Anyway, the first pic is the spalted myrtle uke back and the second, just for completeness, is the front. It's a one-piece soundboard ... the odd bit left over after resawing some sitka and getting an odd number of bits!

Nice Work David....How good is it when you not only save something like this beautiful Myrtle from rotting in a land fill but take it one better and build something beautiful like the Uke we can see in your post....

Nice Myrtle there David , the desk I scored was knocked apart yesterday, all the boards seem to be 100 to 125 mm and a bit plain.
I saw a furniture auction yesterday in which a 5 leaf Mahogany extension table went for $1100 ci 1875 .
Thats 5 leaves approx 1350 x 650 x 19 and the 2 ends 1350 x 900 x 19 of 19th century Mahogany.
Screw holes under the top could be in the way of a few sets , all the leaves would be clear of them though.

Australian Red cedar wardrobes that have a couple of grand worth of red cedar are going for $300 to $400

I am sure that there are people who are willing to resaw a precious old guitar into an ordinary book shelf or at least use the back to veneer the top of a coffee table, etc.

Some pieces I have scrounged up and put aside for something...

I'm pretty sure its some Yellow Cedar ( 3@ 20mm x 140mm x 1700mm) and Silky Oak (190mm x 700mm x 40mm). The Cedar came from a window valance and the S.O from a coat rack back board, both freebies.



I am not sure how usable these pieces are. I am saving them for some sort of first build whether a uke or an acoustic guitar. Still on the look out for more bits and pieces. As I say, I am trying to get stuff together for my first build so I am not sure what I am looking for. I really don't have the do$h to buy a kit.
