Haven't seen this before???

Hello to you all,

The fingerboard has been glued to this neck with titebond for some months now. As per the picture you can see a stain has appeared near the nut on the fingerboard and the headplate. Both are indian rosewood. I haven't had any oils near the guitar so I was wondering if anyone can give some advice here please?

Any chance it's oils leeching out of the actual bone? I've had a few bone nuts that wouldn't stay glued and it turned out the blanks weren't really prepared/degreased properly in the first place. Just a guess though.

Matt sounds like he is on the money. I read an online article once by a museum conservator that said that this would happen if the nut wasnt prepared properly...ie all the natural residues need to be gone. I looked for the article briefly but couldnt locate it. It was quite in depth.

I have had no issue with bone leaching fat/oil and I don't think it is such an issue just as long as it is well cleaned of meat/marrow/cartilage/sinew while still very fresh and 'before' putting it anywhere near hot water, detergents or other chemicals. I saw the bone into fillets which are placed in a container next to an ants nest (the little black buggers work best). Once their finished the bone will look dry....now you can safely boil it up for a final clean (not too long though) and it won't make the fat and detergent soup which can take oil into the bone....I don't do bleach though, don't like the look.

The nut I used come from Stew Mac:

They are a natural colour and unbleached. Maybe thats the reason it is leaching oil. The nut was not glued in so I have removed it and it feels like it is the nut causing the issue.

I was thinking of using true oil for the first time on a neck finish. Will that mean the oil residue from the nut will not be a problem using the true oil?

I emailed Stew Mac and this is what they had to say regard the nut issue.

Alan:

Thank you for contacting us.

Occasionally the vintage bone nuts will have oil in them that would have been removed if they were bleached. You should be able to use Naphtha solvent to remove the oils from the wood.

Pity we can't buy naphtha here in.

Hi,
Yesterday I started to prepare some bone. My process was to simmer it for a few hours, scrub it clean then bleach it overnight and let it dry for a few months.

After reading the article by Sean Barry I won’t put it in the bleach, do you think I should let it dry, then soak it in Shellite??

Do you also degrease your bone. If so, in what?

Good on yah Leigh. It is my favourite drop. Pity the carton is empty and used to store my recording equipment.
