Mahogany decking...what a waste of top quality wood.
Ok so its plantation grown and they state it's a sustainable resource.

Re: Mahogany Decking Timber UNBEATABLE PRICES
I think its infinitely better to use plantation grown mahogany for a deck than to, for instance, rip out all the last beautiful jarrah trees in WA for the same thing. For a start, jarrah won't grow in plantations and it only grows in that small part of the world that is SW WA.
Its about time the world started using plantation grown timber for these uses and leave the fine native forest timbers, here or abroad, for guitars or fine furniture. And its good to see our pacific neighbours establishing industries based around plantation grown timber rather than forest logging. And adding value by selling direct. Good business plan, hope they do well and others follow.

Should have enough BRW in my tonewood stash soon to be able to make a start on my deck.

Yes, our friends in the pacific must have been busy establishing these 'mahogany plantations'. Why would we cut down our own timber when we can support this sort of enterprise.
I would recommend a trip to these and any other group of pacific islands to view first hand the harvesting of these "plantations". Also talk to the locals about how much they get out of it.
cheers

There is a guy who imports fijian mahogany for guitar making mainly for replica les pauls but back and sides would be fine. I can get the link if anyone wants. I have some old honduran and brazilian mahogany (big slabs and body blanks) and personally reckon blackwood is much nicer even non figured blackwood. Sounds better too and I reckon would be much cheaper.
He has some good stuff. Steve, do the villagers get much?
Its a shame they didnt plant brazilian rosewood over there as well.

They did (an do). But unlike pacific 'plantation' - mahogany, brazilian rosewood does not yield 1 m - diameter (and thicker) stems after only 20 or 30 years growing time. It seems that miracles don't happen everywhere on earth.MBP wrote:Its a shame they didnt plant brazilian rosewood over there as well.

Learn something new everyday. I had heard of it but I assumed it was people trying to sell crap indian rosewood. I wonder if it will be good quality when its ready. Some electric makers say the fijian mahogany is crap others say its better. Usually those saying its crap have some of the brazilian stuff and want too much for it.charangohabsburg wrote:They did (an do). I have some nice honduran and a bit of brazilian (which I will probably buy some more as I found someone with it for a good price). But would prefer blackwood.

Sorry, I did not express myself very clear: as far as I know, these plantations were made for two reasons:MBP wrote:Learn something new everyday. I had heard of it but I assumed it was people trying to sell crap indian rosewood.
- obviously to give the species a better chance to survive (actually, Dalbergia nigra is not listed as critically endangered - for several reasons this would be different if not protected, I guess)
- to trade the timber once the days of harvesting will have come - which is not yet the case, at least not for timber which could be interesting for luthierie (except bridge blanks...)
