Luthiers Schools in Melbourne
Evening All,
I'm new to the scene,
So I was wondering if anyone knew of a luthiers school in Melbourne or surrounding area,
Preferably dealing with electric guitars rather than acoustics,
Best Regards
Jay

Re: Luthiers Schools in Melbourne
I looked at NMIT a while back and they do a Night Course at the Preston campus (off the top of my head) I think it worked out at something like roughly $800 per semester (53 hours, One Night per Week) but don't quote me on that. That is without materials...

Welcome to the forum Jay. I'm in 'un zud' so can't help with your query sorry but just wanted to welcome you.
Electrics are a shallower learning curve than acoustics, so along with the internet I'm sure you could learn 'from home' if you wanted (I'm self taught and mostly from the 'pre-internet' days), and there's probably a few builders here that are in Melbourne should you really get stuck. But if you wish to go to school, that's a good 'safe' way to learn also. Whichever you choose, good luck & happy building & be sure to post pictures here!

Jay ,,, welcome aboard, if you're in Melbourne and you want to try other than a tafe, you could check out Monsalvat in Eltham, there are a few luthiers over there and i know there is a course in building an acoustic guitar, by the way,, where are you situated in Melbourne? i'm in the East.
Cheers,,,

Re: Luthiers Schools in Melbourne
Hi Jay.
Just a clarification on the previous two comments.
Thomas Lloyd Guitars is a school of luthiery, run out of Monsalvat.
However, to the best of my knowledge it is acoustic tuition only. I'm not aware of anyone running solid body courses in Victoria as yet, but that's not to say they don't exist.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
Jeremy.

Re: Luthiers Schools in Melbourne
Any luthier could do a course with you.
Perhaps contact your closest one and see what they say.
If you have no wood working experience they will probably be a bit apprehensive.
Peter Crossley is in Victoria so you could check him out

Re: Luthiers Schools in Melbourne
Conacting a luthier for tuition is an option but be aware of the following:
1. Not all luthiers are comfortable with handing on their skills to others. If you intend to make a business out of it then some luthiers have issues with this. So if you get knocked back then don't take it personally.
2. Basic woodworking skills are useful but not essential. I did a course with Paddy Burgin and Dave Freeman in NZ back in 2005 and most of the class had done very little time with woodworking tools but managed to cobble together a half decent acoustic.

Re: Luthiers Schools in Melbourne
Thats is correct. I know people that have done a course then open up shop and start trying to sell their guitars and even reference the teacher to trade on their name. Some are okay, some are shocking. I have seen a few guitars from a well known course and they were terrible, thats why I recommended going and seeing your local luthier as one on one will be best for first build and its likely you will become friends with luthier doing the course which will be better in the long run.kiwigeo wrote:Conacting a luthier for tuition is an option but be aware of the following:
