Damn! beat me to it, I'd been given the go ahead to use 150 year old Oaks that had toppled in Hagley Park (a large park directly in the heart of Christchurch, a bit like Central park in NY) during the February shake but am having a devil of a job getting hold of the dude to go select the log! He doesn't seem to like communicating either by phone (I've left as many messages for him to call me back as there have been aftershocks) or even emails!
I was going to make a couple, gift one to the city & auction off the other, this idea appears as though it would have been done to death by the time I get to build

I made a guitar out of recycled bits of various NZ music industry institutions and auctioned it off to raise funds for Red Cross after the first Canterbury quake:

Unfortunately the media machine pretty much stonewalled my efforts and it only raised $700, so it kinda burns to see the same people jumping through hoops this time around in order to be seen being the good guys.

I confess! I am the culprit who made these guitars.
I have been a member of this forum for some time and enjoy reading comments of others, without anything much of my own to say. However, maybe I can provide some enlightenment re these guitars.

There are seven in all, series named 7.1 after the Sept quake. The bodies are ash, with maple neck and India rosewood fingerboard. the tops are faced with timber from historic buildings destroyed or badly damaged, and each guitar is named according to the origin of the timber. All, except the Epicentre, which has thirteen different timbers, representing a broad section of buildings.

The idea is to raise money for the arts in Christchurch - they will auctioned in November at an event called "Heartstrings"

I said I would post some photos of the seven 7.1's I made for Heartstrings, so here goes. Not been overly computer savvy means I may make a mistake or two so please bear with me. I'd rather be in the "shed" anyway!!!

The project started about a week after the September earthquake. Getting the timber took a while, but all those involved were very cooperative and supportive.

Are you based in Chch? I'd love to come see these beauts 'in the flesh' sometime before the auction and generally have a chat about all things geetars
Nice to include a piece of Gage's kennel, truly a herioc dog, died saving his owner...can't ask for anything more heroic than that! I like the burst on Chester too, do you do your own finishing?

Thanks for your kind comments, Nick. I actually live in Hamilton but have a son in Christchurch, so we get down there periodically. Maybe we can catch up one day.
Yes I do my own finishing - I thought a sunburst would help to lift the fairly bland appearance of the kauri on Chester, which originally was a skirting board from an historic house on Chester St.

The idea was to portray a pile of rubble, which much of the building was after Sept.
