Tool pride

Post by DarwinStrings » Sat Jul 09, 2011 12:25 pm

I have seen a fair bit of tool pride on this forum from various members so I thought I might try to encourage a bit more. I love all my tool but planes are just plain cool. I have spent a bit of time lately cleaning up my Stanley fleet (I only have Stanley planes now as I sold off others I had, mainly duplicates). All I have to do now is get around to "bluing" all the blades and cap irons.

The Plane Fleet

No.151 round, No.101, No.90, No.10-1/2, No.9-1/2, No.6-1/2, No.7, No.5, No.4-1/2, No.2.

Looking nice Jim. Nice collection you have there. You've invested a lot of time with them and I'm sure that they preform flawlessly.

I like what you have done with the handles and knobs. From here they look silky.

Jim, That is a very nice arsenal you have there....Like Lillian, I like the matching handles too...makes them all look like a team...which I am sure they are. :D

I will have to post my team when I can...

Thanks for starting this interesting post...

It looks to me like Jim has made replacement handles himself, with all that figure I am wondering if maybe they are perhaps Wandoo?? The colour is close and its a great 'hard' wearing wood for the job. What ever the species they are really classy looking bits of kit and if hand made they show a good eye and high degree of skill in removing what was not meant to be there.

Cheers

These are from my boat building days. A bit beat up now, definitely not as prrrrty as Jim's but should be good for my venture into guitar making.

The handles are all brand new(Maple, maybe I have Lie Nielsen envy), the oil was wiped on 24hrs before I took the pics. The lever caps on all the bench planes are all re-chromed and I fitted a four inch dual exhaust pipes to the number seven.

These are some gorgeous planes Jim! 8)
Obviously you've done heaps of great restoration work.
How does this new block plane perform compared to the old one?

You're an inspiration as usual Jim! I made the mistake of using my good tools for additions and renos to the house. It will take a lot of time to get my kit back to even acceptable. The smooth rebate is choice. I've always considered that the missing tool in my box.

I guess you can't compare the old 9-1/2 to the new 6-1/2 Markus as the later is a much lower angle. It is a excellent well shaped plane though with a very heavy casting, thick blade and good adjustment. Comparing it to a friends Lie Nielsen it does just as good a job as comfortably (it was only $70 from Amazon I reckon a bargain compared to the competitors).

Same here Bill these planes have been from joinery shop to on site works, they have been with me a long time and at the moment they are not sure who they are in there new paint and other finery. You are right that short carriage makers job has come in very handy over the years.

Good to know this, Jim. Thank you. I have the Veritas low angle block plane which is a wonderful tool as well. But I also have a second low angle (a tuned cheapo) which I only use to take off thick shavings instead of adjusting the much more precise Veritas. But I am thinking to replace the cheapo (Anant) with the new Stanley because sometimes blade adjustment with the Anant is a real PIA and the cheap blade doesn't hold the edge for a long time.

Cheers,
Markus

I haven't got a lovely fleet of hand planes as nice as some but might i say i picked up a nice fretting hammer the other day at a garage sale at a bargain basement price. i already have a nice fretting hammer and has served me well in the past but this new one i've scored is great really great for dislodging the occasional tight nut. Check it out!!!

If that's the fret hammer I'd hate to see the frets.....must be at least the same dimension as 80lb/ft rail.

Yes, that's a great multi use tool. Believe it or not, but with this fretting tool you even can fix messed up crack repairs / varnish touch-ups on $200 chellos.
