Cut some of it up,measure it's stiffness and density and compare it with some Sitka or other spruce that you have on hand Geoff.

Never know - you might be on to something.

My wife ordered one of those fancy German dishwashers. She reckoned that my spending on power tools justified her getting this one instead of something made in China. I must admit that it washes the dishes perfectly well. However, when it arrived I also immediately noticed the same thing as Geoff - "bugger me, this packing case is made of German spruce". It looked and smelled like spruce, was snowy white and light, and about 25% of it happened to be perfectly quarter-sawn. It is now bracing in my Nick Lucas style L-00. That guitar is about a year old and going well. It is a great idea to check the rubbish pile of your local electrical retailer. Look for the Meile cartons.

For those in Sydney who may be close to Emu Plains Felder NSW in Emu Plains gets lots of machines in crates on pallets that are made of Spruce. Some of the sections are 5 x 4 inches in the pallet bases.. There is a wide variation in grain but I saw some fine stuff when I was there last year. Worth a look and they can only say no.
