Great job on both the cutaway and the rosette. Very nice!

Thanks for your kind words.

Craig - unfortunately this is a commission and not a 'keeper'. I told the client it'd be done by Xmas - I should never make those kind of promises! I'll be closeâ€¦ The other one I'm building at the moment is also a commission, but it'll be easier to part with as it's a left-hander and I won't be able to play it anyway. Haven't got the back on that one yet, so it's a long way off being finished. I'm looking forward to buiding myself a new instrument, but I want to get these ones done first.

I've been carving the neck today and I have to say that I think this is one the most enjoyble jobs.

Really nice work, Graham!

You're right, those are some very cool rosette and purfling selections. If you have those pages scanned in high-resolution, I'd really appreciate getting copies of the hi-res files, if possible.

Merry Christmas to all luthiers and lovers of guitar! - my wife says I'm a guitar extremist, but I'd prefer the term 'exstrumist' , thank you.

Well, I did it! I got the guitar to the client at 5pm this afternoon, Christmas Eve, as promised. I didn't think I was going to make it for a while. The past few weeks have been very intense, but what a great feeling of satisfaction in the end. My only complaint is that I'd like to have had the guitar for a while to playâ€¦ oh well, that's the luthier's lot, I s'pose.

I took some pics for you 'guitar porn' fiends.

Happy plucking over the festive season - take some time to enjoy playing the treasures you build.

Graham, I assume you cut the pickguard since it perfectly matches the curves in the guitar. Tell me how you cut it out so smoothly, please.

Ron - I'd designed the pickguard for a previous guitar and quite liked the way it sort of followed the bodyline. I make templates out of 4mm MDF. If the template is accurate, it's easy to get the work accurate. It can be helpful, to stick the template to the pickguard material with double sided tape. Make sure the template on the top of the pickguard sheet or you'll end up with a left handed pickguard! The cut around the template was made with a scalpel - a new exacto blade would do as well - getting the line as smooth as possible. I find that if you make a decent cut into that material you can carefully break the shape out, rather that trying to cut all the way through. I use small files and sandpaper to refine the line. I then put a bevel all the way round using a Dremel tool with a fine sanding wheel.
