they both look good to my eye Nick. Very artistic with your builds have you ever made jewellery? Can't really decide what is my preference. Perhaps the top one, if around the jack plug there was some black as well.

G'day Nick.

I love the top one - that's a great solution to your dilemma. Does enough to offset and draw attention, while maintaining the flow of your bookmatch. Very well executed indeed and the style flows with that used already. 8)

The second (fern leaf) does not work for me at all. It looks well executed which I expect from you but is not my taste. Obviously, this is a personal thing and I'm sure others will love it just the same.

Jeremy.

Yes as I say, I'm happy with the 'partial' graft but as to the fern, once I'd done it and seen it in place I wasn't convinced (came across differently in my head  ) & I think you've nailed it Lillian, I couldn't quite put my finger on why I wasn't excited by it, but now you've said it it does look like an after thought. Fortunately it's not too late to put an insert/graft in there, I still have the offcuts from the side to get a colour match so may do something with that.
Thanks everybody for your honest critique, it was what was needed & the reason I asked, very much appreciated. :D

Nick, great work and like it or not that sort of adventurousness often leads to great things. I prefer the leaf, to me the other looks somehow unfinished. If I had designed the leaf the only thing I would have done differently is that I would have rounded the bottom curve just up against the binding rather than adding the short stem, but I didn't design it did I.

With butt joints that clean, I don't think the end graft is really necessary. I mostly see them as
a) a way to cover up a lousy joint (and thus save time by not bothering to make a good one), and
b) an opportunity for artistic decoration.

I rather like the fern. Possibly a little bit too big, but the concept is good.

The other one, I think I prefer just butted. Having the binding extend down looks kind of like you want to follow the normal procedure of a graft, but don't want to cover up the wood. Don't give in to peer pressure 8) Just show off the wood and leave out the unnecessary graft.

Another thing that can be done is to put a small inlay just around the end pin hole (a spiral would be cool). But my favorite in general is probably end graft with inlay inside it acknowledging the pin. Definitely a fan of mitered purflings too :)

New Zealand (who wear a Silver Fern proudly on there chest) beat Australia last week at it (which makes a nice change because it's usually Australia winning everything) & are going to repeat the process again tomorrow night.

I also like #1 but I think a thin ebony strip joining the two inlays would finish and highlight the butt join.

#2 doesn't do it for me either. Again, would have preferred a simple thin purfling strip along the join to highlight the way the end grain matches so perfectly. It's kind of hidden with the leaf.

Hmmm Rugby? You can have it...Far too much hanky panky nonsense with men and their bottoms to be considered a 'manly' game.

So you reckon Hopoate would still be in the game if he had thrown on a pleated skirt and played netball instead Kim.

I doubt it Jim, I think the urge to use the 6 pack grip when playing GD would have proven too much and he would have been carded right out of the game.

Sorry Nicko..back on track

I got talked into playing on the women's rugby team in Uni. I had never heard of the game or seen it played before. I should have been suspicious when they waited until I was drunk to bring up the subject. I lasted two games and quit. I couldn't handle it. It was great training though. It made basic training in the Army seem like a vacation.

No worries, don't mind talking rugby, after all it's our national sport and the only one we can beat you bloody Aussies at ! I can just see Kim at GD bearing down on some poor GA, he would be no use against our plastic Kiwi, Irene though

The fern has gone, replaced by something simpler so it's too late now if anybody liked it  . I didn't take a picture of the new version & I'm away for two weeks shortly, but you'll see it in the gallery when I post the finished shots.
