just a thought for a future build. Does anyone have an illustartion of the bracing pattern for a guitar that displays an alternate soundhole or multiple soundholes such as the kind that are close to the edge of the upper bout? im wondering whether the standard x bracing has to be reinforced where the standard soundhole goes or nothing at all. What i mean is illustrated in this pictue below but im more interested in what underneath looks like on the soundboard.

Hi Ray, I think the soundhole led to the X brace and not the other way round so if you move the soundhole you don't need to use an X anymore.

You should be able find Ovation bracing on the net. I've come across it before but can't remember where.
have fun experimenting.

Matt's Kasha braced Tenor Uke has the soundholes in the upper bout. You may be able to do something along those lines.

Denis Lehay also has built an instrument with sound holes in the upper bout. He might be able to help out.

The Kasha bracing pretty much isolates the upper bout treble side from much vibration and sound production due to the treble confinement bars. This makes the upper bout a really good spot to put some soundholes through, as you're not wasting any active soundboard area. The same can't be said for the bass side upper bout though, as the bass tone bar runs right up there.

I just used a cross grain spruce patch in the area of the holes, made so that the holes in the patch were slightly larger than the holes in the soundboard so that it couldn't be seen from the outside. A thinner hardwood patch might be a better option?
