Violin making equivalent to Gore/Gillet Book

Post by Craig Bumgarner » Thu Nov 05, 2015 2:38 am

Anyone know of a violin making equivalent to Contemporary Acoustic Guitar Design and Build? That is, one discusses design and building bases on the physics of violins as opposed to copying plans or building by touch and feel. The Book by Gore & Gilet has helped me a great deal in understanding what goes on in guitars and how to build better. My wandering mind is turning toward violins and would hope there might be something similar in the violin world. I've have heard that violin researchers are well advanced in this, but no idea where to even start looking.

Hello Craig,

I'm not into violin building so I can't advice any good books.

But this contains a lot of info (also some guitar related stuff) for the coming winter (at least over here)..

The Catgut Society would be a good start: http://www.catgutacoustical.org/

The late Carleen Hutchins pioneered a lot of research into violins. Al Carruth, who I'm sure you'll have heard of, worked with Carleen and would likely be able to point you in the best direction. He's pretty good at responding to emails, so you should be able to contact Al via his website.

I happened upon this site: http://www.violinresearch.com/. I can't vouch for the quality of the answers, but he seems to be asking the right questions.

Thanks for your suggestions! I'm familiar with the Catgut Society and their work. I've exchanged emails with Alan in the past, always very informative and willing to share his knowledge.
