Roy Courtnall Plans

Post by charangohabsburg » Thu Jun 28, 2012 8:52 pm

I am considering Roy Courtnall's book Making Master Guitars as one of the few milestones in luthierie literature and I thought the link to purchasing the full scale versions of the reduced plans this book features should not be missing in the ANZLF Instrument Plans collection. Roy Courtnall also drew some other plans (not only classical guitar) he also is selling directly (as it seems).

Roy Courtnall's "Making Master Guitars" plans:
  • Antonio de Torres 1 (SE 70)
  • Antonio de Torres 2 (SE 117)
  • Santos Hernández (Flamenco Guitar)
  • Hermann Hauser I
  • Hernández y Aguado
  • Ignacio Fleta
  • Robert Bouchet
  • Daniel Friederich
  • José Romanillos
Other Roy Courtnall guitar plans (same link as above):
  • Archtop Jazz Guitar - single cutaway - 642 mm scale
  • Maccaferri D-hole - single cutaway - 640 mm scale
  • Roy Courtnall - Lattice Strutting Design
  • 10-string Classical Concert Guitar
  • Double sound hole lattice braced concert guitar, influenced by Francisco Simplicio
  • Marcelo Barbero Flamenco Guitar
  • Manuel Ramirez
Other instruments:

Some, but not always all of the above plans can also be purchased from luthierie suppliers such as LMI, Madinter (Spain), and may be others. Prices may be better, but shipping not included (as it is (at the moment) when buying directly from the UK. It might be well worth to compare total costs.

Cheers,
Markus

My version of Making Master Guitars has the rough plans (for the body at least (half of the body)) on the pages however they are reduced in scale. In order to blow them up you simply have to blow up the page so the squares on the plan section of the page are 1cm x 1 cm. 20 bucks a plan is a bit steep when you are paying up to 120 bucks for the book (hardback with shipping).

There is a discussion on the accuracy of the plans in the Courtnall book here: http://www.classicalguitardelcamp.com/v ... 11&t=59565
