A musical challenge......

Post by Colonial Tonewoods » Tue May 06, 2008 9:55 pm

First person who gets this one correct wins a set of 20 year old figured cherry for steel string guitar.

Please, on the honor system, no internet searching.

What do the songs "Little Sister," "I Fall To Pieces," and "Jingle Bell Rock" have in common?

Good luck.

Little Sister was recorded firstly by Elvis and then Ry Cooder. I Fall to Pieces was Patsy Cline (my favorite female vocalist) and I haven't got a clue who recorded Jingle Bell Rock but it would have been mid fifties.

So my guess is that the original artists have all gone to meet their maker.

My guess is all the songs where recorded by there original artists in the same key.

I can only think of the tune for Jingle Bell Rock, so forgive me if this is a stupid guess, but there is wood at stake!: Are all three using the same chord progression?

Getting close....
Jingle Bell Rock is in the Key of D major, Little Sister is in the key of E major and I Fall To Pieces is in the key of F major.

One last clue...think of a Gibson Byrdland with one Charlie Christian pickup and a great sessions musician......

Scotty played on most of Elvis recordings but I think some of the earlier ones were Hank Garland.

The only other guitarists that I know of that played with Elvis were James Burton but he was much later and I think a Tele was his choice of weapon.
And the other might have been Chet 'cause I think he produced some of Elvis earlier stuff and may have jumped in on the guitar.

Three things in common with all these songs......they all dont include the word "spaghetti" in the lyrics.

Only the old buggers that are having guesses can remember when they were first released? Or maybe they're the only ones who know how the tunes go?

(No offence meant to the old buggers... After all, I'll be an old bugger one day and probably do the same sort of quizzes about classic old bands like Nirvana, the Foo-Fighters, Pearl Jam or the Smashing Pumpkins. Ahh, the good old days!)

I resent being called an old bugger Joel. I'd much rather be refered to as an old bastard or worse.

Besides I was only 5 when Elvis released Little Sister in 1961.

Yeah - but you were probably an old bugger even then :D

By the way isn't Elvis releasing Little Sister a bit like Michael Jackson . . . oh never mind
