round aussie trip

Post by aljosha » Fri Jan 09, 2015 11:56 pm

hy,

I'm not really active in this forum, but anyhow

I'm coming to Perth on the 14th next week and will travel around for about a year
Plan ist to get to Melbourne, along the northern coast, all on a bicycle
and if time allowes finish the circle back to Perth
a trip to tassie is also on the list

now I thought Id let you guys know and if someone wants to meet up for a bit o talk or something please let me know
I will Post when I reach Darwin and Cairns so you can guess where I am

and just that you know a bit about me
Im 24 from austria, building guitars for about 4 years now (semihobby)
so far I finished 14 Instruments
2 electrics, 1 octave and 1 A Mando (both flattop), 2 Weissenborns and the rest acoustics
I build Somogyi style, and also build Amps, fx and pretty much anything really...

and I wont bring a guitar, it seems to bee just too much hassle...

best
josh

Goodness, that is ambitious. Do you realise how big Australia is, and how hot and remote it gets up north?

Hi Josh,

Welcome to the forum.

You say you're going to travel Perth to Melbourne along the "North Coast". You've got a hell of a journey ahead of you. Here's a couple of links to Australian bike forums that you'll find useful. I'm on the Adelaide Cyclists forum:

http://www.bicycles.net.au/forums/viewt ... =2&t=27768
http://www.adelaidecyclists.com/

Give me a heads up when you're through Adelaide and if Im around we can tee up accommodation and a workshop visit..and if youre not totally buggered from your ride Ill take you on a local ride in the Adelaide Hills.

Cheers Martin

I'm in Cairns. Let me know when you're getting near. We can work something out.

BTW. You had best be planning the northern part of the journey in the dry season. Otherwise it won't be any fun at all.

LOL that reminds of the time I was a fresh off the boat Kiwi and thought I'd take a "quick" bus trip from Adelaide-Sydney-Cairns. It was in the days when smoking was still allowed on inter-state buses.

My parents drove down the east coast once and recount the tale of searching for accommodation, the town they were in was full but one helpful soul knew another place that might have a room so rung and sure enough they had a vacancy. "How do we get there?" "It's not far, just go down to the corner, turn right and keep going straight, it's down the end of that road. Ya can't miss it." an hour and a half later (and remember they're driving at approx 100-120km/hr) and Dad's panicking because he thinks they've missed it miles back when the road does come to an end and there is indeed a Motel! 150 plus KM's is "just down the road" in Aussie parlance.

G'day Josh, If you travel up the Stuart Highway to Darwin be real careful and get right out of the way of those semi-trailers that have three full trailers on the back (road train), that last trailer often gets a wobble up and that road is still one lane each way in some parts. If you do happen to make it to Darwin PM me and I'll give you a phone number so you can drop in and wash that N.T. dust out of you throat.
Life is good when you are amongst the wood.

LOL.....right now I'm not too far from where you are....I'm about 60km off the coast from Geraldton on an oil rig. You may have a noticed helicopter activity out of Geraldton Airport on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays....theyre ferrying people to and from the rig.

Just saw Josh off this morning after him spending an overnight stay. Getting the shed tour, beer on the patio and a good feed. Must have been tired cause he slept till 8am.

Very nice bloke that has a lot more stamina than I would ever profess to have.

hy,

Al, I had your details but my phone decided to reset itself...hate that thing...
I am in TV, will do a trip to Maggie in between, but well
let me know when it suits you best

to all the others, I made a very hard decision, I'm flying out from Townsville
the weather aint exactly perfect, it's winter down south (I came over too fast...)
and ridin the bike aint no fun on the east coast...

but I will come back in a few years, maybe/probably on a working holiday visa, and a car or motorbike...

anyhow
