hardest guitar ive ever built!

Post by scuffle » Fri May 09, 2014 5:12 pm

this is my most recent build. my sons first birthday cake
has a very mushy taptone

probably one of the more challenging builds ive done. i had a few issues with glue seams.

Specs:
-one piece chocolate cake with green fondant carve top
-chocolate fondant fretboard with custom fret placement
-white pickguard (vanilla flavoured)
-flat, brown tunomatic style bridge
-vanilla flavoured fret markers
-pickups have tasty little sugar balls for pole pieces

the glue I used was chocolate icing. doesnt seem to hold very well so i wouldnt recommend it
took me the good part of 4 hours to make. i am not a cake maker :P :P :P

I think there might be some fret buzz there, but good job, i wouldn't like to tackle that build. Wayne

Very cool! 8)

Which string set did you find useful for this guitar?

That's Awesome! I read a great book as a child that helped me though a similar birthday build.
Hope it helps anyone thinking of undertaking similar builds. Did you find Tim Tams produced too muddy a sound as humbuckers?

Thanks guys!
just using string from spotlight. they seem to be pretty weak and Im having issues with getting proper tension. They keep slipping out of the tuning pegs!

Tim Tams? That would have been an awesome idea! I just used flat pieces of icing :P I feel like tim tams would give a more 'open' tone as opposed to the flopping sound fom the icing.

fret buzz has been another issue. filing the frets isnt really an option though as they are so soft (and tasty) they would disappear with one pass! also might have something to do with tension issues i mentioned above :)

Andrew, For single coils I find you cannot go past Arnott's Tee Vee Snacks (those malt stick things)

If you're into figured chocolates you could use a curly wurly somehow...haha

Saaaweeet! Love how you've integrated the 'non' straight frets for better intonation. What brand of string did you use?

you will be happy to know the cake was a success! it was cut up and handed out in parts :)

"who wants the neck pickup?" i shouted. Only 4 people out of 40 knew what i meant!
i still have the neck and headstock left. who wants a piece?

Oh, that's cool. You will remember this if she at some point might mean you were keeping too much "useless" stuff in your shed!

Andrew, Markus is just jealous as when he has to make a guitar themed cake he has to first make this:

Then he has to then decapitate and amputate to get his creation looking like this:

Add a neck and Voila!
Charango Cake:

If I have learned anything from this post it is that there are some truly horrifying pictures of cakes on the internet...

try "armadillo cake" into google images...
