Parlour Guitar

Hi to you all,

This is a Parlour sized guitar I have been working on for a few years and finally finished it this week. This one is for a mate who wanted a small, fingerstyle guitar. I used the Scott Antes plan as a guide but used parbolic bracing and a standard x brace design. It is a bright sounding guitar with good projection. The guitar has a wide, almost flat fingerboard profile as per the plan which would take a lot of getting used to if it was a regular player for myself.

Top: Western Red Cedar for Shane at High Mountain Tonewood

Back and side: Blackwood from Bob Connor

Fingerboard, bridge, endgraft, binding and headplate : East Indian Rosewood for Shane HM Tonewoods

Rosette: Koa

Shellac, French Polished finish.

That's a very nice looking guitar!

What is the width (depth) of the sides? The guitar looks a bit "fatter" than other parlour guitars I have seen, but maybe it's just an optical illusion due to the camera position.

Lovely guitar Alan, I really like the satin finish, especially on the smaller bodies, nice package all over the style of the bridge and rose fit in really well.

Marcus: The sides are 100mm at the butt and 85mm at the neck block. I used the Scott Antes Concert guitar plan as a guide but changed the bracing design and used a 24.9" scale.

I think this is a very cool guitar, I really like the shape and have been inspired to make a parlour style guitar. I am just CAD’ing up my plans, and was curious about your dimensions. You mentioned you worked off the Scott Antes plans but from my calculation is seems narrow compared to other parlour plans. Dose this sound correct?

Scale: 24.5“, but you used 24.9”

Body - 18.25” = 464mm
Upper bout - 9.13” = 232mm
Waist - 7.13” = 181mm
Low bout - 12.25” = 311mm

The guitar I built used the same specs as you have supplied and I used a 24.9 inch scale length. My bracing was an experiment where I used 7.5 mm wide X brace with a parabolic shape with the higest point being 14mm at the x intersection down to 2mm. Similar specs for the tone and finger brace and I used a fairly heafty transverse brace as per the plan. I also used spruce soundhole patch.

The guitar has plenty of volume and the cedar to I used produced a good tone. The Scott Antes plan has been used by many builders and most change the brace dimensions as it is a bit on the heavy side. Some have used a 13 frett to the body as well with good results.

I have collected a few threads on the Scott Antes plan when I was researching the plan. I can send them to you if you think they might be usefull.
