Satin Box

Post by mac007 » Fri Aug 16, 2024 12:35 pm

Hi,

I recently bought two planks of Satin Box with view to making some necks.

I read "somewhere" it had good properties in terms of stiffness and stability.

Unloading it from the car I noticed how heavy it is. On checking-it has a density ~900kg/m3
Curly maple seems around half that.

Has anyone tried this species (SB) for acoustic or archtop necks?

A dense neck wood is great for sustain...but can affect balance of the instrument...especially if youre playing it standing up

Don't know about necks but Tim Spittle was selling it as binding and I thought it was really good.
