purple stuff

Post by rocket » Mon Aug 24, 2009 7:55 pm

does anyone remember me asking about some timber called purple heart? Well when i bought it it was deep purple, when i dressed it it turned a dull brown colour, and then after a while returned to it's former glorious purple. Well i've made a couple of fret boards out of the stuff, i'll probably use next year, by which time they will have as much colour as possible. Not many geeters around with a purple fret board, hey!

The artist formerly known as Prince might be interested in a fretboard formerly known as purple

Hi Rocket,

Purple heart is a South American timber and is very rare and expensive. I made pens out of it which I sold at a Melbourne Craft Market. These pens sold well when new, as they were very bright in color - a pinky purple.

Unfortunately you will find the timber darkens rather quickly to a deep browny purple.

I bound my first uke in purple heart, and it looked great.

When I look back on photos of the uke that were taken when it was freshly finished, it has definately changed a lot in colour over the last couple of years. It is certainly darker and less.....purple? Still looks good though, and is still vastly contrasting to any of the other timber on the uke.
