Just wondering if you were the one who won the 53 million. Im just worried if you did win it that there would be no tone wood left for any of us.

He'd never tell us. Just a quiet whisper of "Hey, you want to buy some tonewood" form the shadows is all we'll hear.

At least we would know if it was Martin! Headlines would read :
"World's Major guitar manufacturers puzzled by shortage of good tonewoods"....The worlds biggest guitar manufacturers today faced closure or huge lay offs on the shop floor as they were unable to secure their normally reliable supply of the quality woods used for building their products. Christain Martin the 3rd, CEO of the famous 'Martin' guitar company, today told us that all of the world's tonewood supplies were being shipped to a mystery location somewhere in the hills to the north of Adelaide, a city located on the southern coast of Australia. "Quite frankly we are puzzled and so are our competitors, as to just where all the wood is going! It's as if there is a black hole somewhere in Adelaide,Australia sucking in the world's supplies If this trend continues we will be unable to maintain our production lines and be unable to manufacture guitars we have made for over one hundred years, we may even be forced switch to a supply of MDF to just keep our production lines open, but of course our quality will drop using this material."
All attempts to speak to Tonewood suppliers have been met with the same short, stern answer "I'm sorry but we are under strict contractual obligations not to reveal the destination of our shipments." Equally all attempts to look for the mystery buyer in Adelaide were unsucessful, this despite the attempts of highly paid private investigators hired jointly by Gibson, Fender,Yamaha and Taylor to find the mystery company stockpiling the world's tonewood supplies. The fact that all of these usually competitive companies have joined together in this search is testament to the seriousness of the situation.
Investigations are ongoing.

Yes, we can expect a bail out package for those major players in the guitar manufacture business, with further incentives funneled to the HPL manufacturing firms, to shore up the availability of faux wood like products. Yet deep in the woods, nestled safely in the Adelaide hills is 'The Tone Wood Bunker'.....Screw Kevin.

Yeah right....I own all the tonewood in the world. I wish.

On to more serious matters. Two ribs have been glued up on the lute. Pics are of first rib being glued up.....no pics of second rib as camera battery is on its last legs and isnt holding a harge for more than 15 minutes.

I decided to use some commercial wbw purfling in between the IRW ribs....getting the purfling bent to shape around the arse of the lute is a pain as the purfling has to be bent at right angles to the orientation youd normally have it for a guitar. Had to try a few different purflings before I found the one that did the job. The glue job went ok but sometimes its handy having 8 arms for such jobs.

Pics of two ribs glued in tomorrow when the camera is up and running.

Cheers Martin

Well I'll be "luted".It will all get going now Martin. If you keep nice tight joints around that form it should end up rock solid.Nice work.

Martin,

That's looking good and the staves are meeting the mould where they should - great stuff. The purfling can be tricky to bend over the "back end" area but I found bending dry and slowly on a hot pipe keeping the purfling moving all the time worked pretty well.

Very inspiring, Martin. It's looking fantastic, and I'm sure it will turn out superb.

As said, thanks for posting this.

Has it been very difficult to get the staves to meet up yet?

Niiicce 8) 8) Good Job Martin and I'm with everybody else especially Craig, those purflings really add something more to the whole classy job so far. What sort of glue are you using, is that the Hot Hide glue or the fish glue?

Im using hot hide glue. Its ubeaut brand stuff and Im not sure of strength of the stuff. Its setting very fast despite warming up wood with a heat gun before glue up so strength might be a bit on the high side. regardless the stuff sticks like shit to a blanket....went to pick up a map pin and ended up with 6 of the suckers stuck to my fingers!! :?

Thanks Dave (the lute master),

Yes I quickly discovered the trick to bending the purfling over the arse end of the mold. The purfling is 2mm high which is about right for bending....anything less tends to twist when you bend it.
