Curly Pete

Post by anders » Mon Jun 22, 2020 7:46 pm

Does anybody know if Curly Pete is still selling wood, I cannot see anything on ebay and not sure how to contact him.
Also, I'm looking for somewhere to get some straight grained acacia desert woods, all the places I have tried have just been unreliable.

Cheers,
Anders

Thanks Nigel. I have sent him a couple of Instagram messages but have got no reply, maybe he just doesn't have what I'm chasing?
Do you know any supplies of acacia wood on the gold coast ?
Had a look at your website, nice guitars!

Hi Anders

I last purchased timber from him in 2018 and contacted him through email at [email protected]

I'm pretty sure Pete's closed up shop.

Actually I don't...

It has been a long time since I've heard from Pete.

What I can say is this - I doubt he has stopped unless something serious has happened. He has invested in a significant setup and I can't see Pete ever doing anything else other than milling trees and creating from wood (and metal)! However, he never really liked or had time to deal in small quantities. He had large contracts to fulfil that occupied much of his time - that and kids came along and well, stuff happens.

It is why we used to work together where I would pick through dry stock for the special pieces, sort, re-saw and mill further to create individual sets and blanks, individually photograph them and finally list online to sell as a specialist small supply line. It was time consuming work. Alas, I had to move and it wasn't viable by distance. Perhaps he is simply away??

The only other contact I would know for straight grained desert species specifically would be Graham Naughton from Loggerheads - but it's been even longer since I've heard from him, so I'm really not much help! He only intermittently had stock when he was able to take a trip west and mill from that. Sometimes you would have to wait until he was making his next excursion.

Finally, there is Tim at Australian Tonewoods .com - he often has fretboards at least and I'm pretty sure he is still operational.

None of these species are what you would consider "commercially" available. Small quantities will turn up at various suppliers at different times, so you'd have to keep your eye out.

Sorry I could not be more helpful.

Jeremy.

Pete is still gathering/cutting/selling timbers but is just doing it on another scale now. You can still get stuff from him when things align.
He is making some amazing tools and getting on with things. He is often out and about with the family as well as doing the milling/sourcing timber thing.
I got a hand full of beautiful Blackwood sets from him at the last lost trades fair in Bendigo. He also often advertises the boards or guitar sets he has on offer via his instagram account...They go quickly and it is usually multiple sets of. Not the odd one or two.
Top fella and knows more about our timbers than almost anyone I've ever come across.
