Logo Contest - win some tonewood

There are obviously some pretty talented people on the forum, and if you're up for it. I'd like to propose a design contest.

And of course, the prize has got to be some tonewood, plus postage to you.

To go along with the new website, and to brand my instruments, I'd like a logo that I can use on my website, headstock on guitars and ukes.

Think about having to cut this in pearl, and how much time and how difficult it's going to be in your design considerations. This is the stumbling block that I came up against, and thought that there has to be someone out there that can see an elegant solution.

The requirements are that I'd like to be able to inlay the logo in the guitars so really fine, fiddly work is probably not appropriate there, and perhaps in the ukes, but as they are so much smaller, those could be screen printed. So you've got an idea of the dimensions we're talking about.

I'd also require the art work to be able to use

The name is Barron River Guitars, but that's a lot to fit into that space, unless you're a lot more clever than I am. You can have different versions suited to each medium.

Be creative. I really look forward to seeing what you can come up with.

allen what a good idea. I decided to quickly mock up a design to try my luck with the tonewood, dont need it but its funny how the fishing tackle syndrome applies in the luthier world. Anyway hope you think its okay. xray

Why didn't I think of that? Must be why you're a moderator and I'm simply a participator

Questions though - when is the cut off date/time?

And a suggestion - I'd say to pm entries to you rather than post them. Just means you can avoid anyone appearing to modify/copy others designs - and any claims thereof. Then you could post all the 'entries' post deadline along with the 'winner'... Also builds tension...

You bet Jeremy. That's why I'm on the big bucks. An ideas man.

Let's give it a week and a bit. So closing is next Sunday night.

Making it a level playing field is an option, but then seeing someone else's idea may spark another, more brilliant one. Who hasn't thought of ripping off your rosette idea.

Let's all be adults about this, and if you knowingly used another members ideas to refine your own, then just say so. If you'd rather email them to me directly, then that's fine as well.

There is a fair bit of wood in the bunker, and I'm not adverse to handing out a first and second prize.

i dont want to get my hopes up allen but you have my address in dubbo dont you?
So far im looking good. Im going to play on everyone else being busy at this taxable time of year. A word of advise for everyone who is thinking of losing, i mean entering, consider that time could be spent making guitars and it would be time well spent. sorry allen im competative.

Took the idea from your website with the small parlour size acoustic. I think you should use this little dragon fly in your guitars, it's unique, not to complicated and really helps define a 'logo'. It's easy to use on all guitars, can be changed around to suit different headstock shapes.

Everyone always needs tonewood. And even though you might not have a specific, immidiate need for anything right now, i happen to know a pretty good mate of yours who you could always donate it to

Rightio Allen, gents, here we go.
The drawings are pretty crude but i didn't want to spend the time makin them micky mouse on the computer incase it wasn't the avenue you wanted to go down.

My first mock up of designs play on the 'Barron' part of Barron Rivers Guitars. I've attatched two images of a higher society type baron (and yes i know the 'Barron" in Barron rivers guitars has two 'r' letters in it as apposed to the one 'r' in the 'baron' which refers to this chap).

One of the two gents is sporting a standard tie, the other an elegant bowtie. Both gents are wearing a very classy monacle and top hat which will represent just how classy and top shelf you guitars are Allen (suck up #1)

The next designs also play on the baron part, but this time the flyity type baron of red baron fame.
There are two side on profiles with his scarf waving behind him. One with an ear flaped hat, one with standard helmet. Also desinged is one front on flyity baron with a wind blown mustache. Allen this type of barron represents the toughness and punch that your guitars posses (suck up #2)

Also down this avenue of baronism i thought a pretty simple but applicable logo could be the iron cross that the Red Baron had on his plane

Lastly, i noticed that the shape of one half of a guitar is pretty darn close to a capital B, so this design incorperates that.
The 'r' afterwards is dodgy but i figure Allen that you would probably want to pick the font for that and make the decision whether or not to have a 'g' or 'r' after the guitar/B logo. This one would be pretty simple but a clever little logo i think and would fit on the uke's easily aswell.

I once again appologise for the crapness of the drawings, but like i said, i didnt want to put the computer time into them unless necessary.

You guys are pretty damn clever, and I'm really enjoying seeing what you're coming up with. Not to mention being pretty impressed.

Deano's ideas are great, and I'm liking the play on the guitar shape that Alan and Austen have come up with.

There's still a long time until this closes, so heaps of time to come up with some ideas.

I've just done a bit of a clean up in the tonewood bunker, and had a look at what's been hidden away for some time. The lucky winner is going to get a choice, 'cause there's a lot to choose from, but not everyone is in need of the same thing.

So the choices right now are tops of Engelman, Sitka or Western Red Cedar. Backs and sides of Sapele, Indian Rosewood, or Blackwood. Even some Montery Cypress if that floats your boat.

And if the the winning submission really blows my fur back, then I'll send you both body and top set.

Geez, Sunday night already?? Well, these will have to do...

Ode to time - sunk several hours into these but had hoped to do a few others too; still had some ideas left... busy week.

Well who knows if any of these - or a variation thereof - do anything for you, erm blow your fur back? but I had fun making them anyhow

These first lot were based on your name - a river and guitars. I was shooting for something bold and recognizable. Could be made 'fancy' for more expensive instruments and could be used as an applique for smaller instruments too.

Then I thought you needn't use your name at all if the logo was recognizable and had some relevance, when your name is on the label inside. So i tried these 'medallions' which I like the effect of... Should be easier to inlay too. I like the 'silhouette' type look.

And these a little more elaborate...

It's only Sunday afternoon in the west, so I figure it's not too late to submit my paltry effort.

This has been a little like waiting for an e-Bay auction to end, biding my time to see what everyone else submits so I can better them at the last gasp.

I'm fairly computer-savvy, but I'm damned if I could find the bezier curve tool when I needed it so this is drawn freehand (as the more eagle-eyed among you might guess). Obviously this earns me double points. The fact that no alcohol was consumed in the conception or execution of this design should just about seal the deal.

The four individual shapes represent a stylised "B" and an "R" and would be easy to cut from MOP or abalone. I feel the "G" is redundant given that the design is to appear on a "G"uitar. Besides which, I couldn't figure out how to incorporate it.

My own logo uses similar shapes and the only part I've sometimes had a problem with is in chiselling out the sharp points in the cavities. Tip: you can hide a lot of mistakes if you're inlaying into ebony!

Well, I suppose those who entered have been waiting to hear what I thought would work the best. I tried to get on this morning, but Bob must have kicked the plug out of the server while he was trying to squirrel away some more of that Blackwood.

There were some really good ideas, and I had to rank each entry on it's ability to be a recognizable motif that would work in print and inlayed. Also a big consideration was to fit into my style without a great deal of modification. And finally ease of hand cutting in pearl or wood, and then being able to inlay it without spending a week at it.

The second place entry was Deano's. Quite clever on a modification of something I had already done, but having already cut that in pearl, I know how much time that is going to take.

So first place goes to the entry that met those criteria, and was Matt Blacka's.

I'm going to send Deano an Engelman top, and Matt can let me know what he would like in the way of back and sides or a couple of tops if he prefers.

Thank you to everyone for participating. I very much appreciate that you took the time to put something together.
