Hello All.

My name is Ted . I have been studying classical gitar now for three years and recently built a nice guitar using building lessons at Harold Lloyd guitars in Melbourne.
The buildingbug got hold of me and I am preparing myself to do some work at home in the shed.
I am looking at some tools and already collected local timbers .
Today I got hold of a two meter log blackwood with a diameter of about 1 meter. Very hard work to transport to a friend with a mill.
I think that this forum allows anyone to learn a lot from other peoples experiences and I am looking forward to find out .

Welcome to the forum Ted. Thats a nice first effort youve banged up there. from the photos it looks like you used a seperate neck and body construction rather than the traditional Spanish method. What sort of neck join did you use?

That's a very admirable first instrument. Does it meet your expectation in the way of tone and playability? It's amazing how many first instruments end up better than the guitars that we had before our first build.

So what's happening with that Blackwood Log?

Welcome Ted! Very nice job there on the classical. I'm a beginner like yourself and have only built two lap slide guitars so far. It sure is a fun way to relax on the weekends.

A tidy bit of work you have completed there ted. There is a shed thread here somewhere for when you get up and running you can resurrect it and show us your beginnings.

Thank you all for your friendly reactions.
I will try to answer in one hit the questions so far.

Martin---- The neck and body joint is a dove tail connection.
Whilst I used a drawing of a Ramirez guitar , my instructor preferred Dovetails and who was I to argue at that stage. I have been reading the traditional spanish method and I will have a go at that next time , because that looks easier, especially with a limited toolchest.

Sebastian 56---This guitar is actually not my first one.
Originally I used Bunya pine soundbord , but stuffed up during fitting top to sides. My instructor felt sorry for me and let me make up my own mind as to start again. Luckily the neck had not been fitted at that stage , so I only had to fabricate new back , sides and soundboard.
I twisted his arm and sweetened him up with honey(I am also a beekeeper) and got hold of a prime piece of King billy pine to make the soundboard.

Allen--- I really cannot answer your question because I do not have enough experience. However my old guitar (Bozo Padunavac Model B 5)
does not play as niece as my own built. The sound is clear with better sustain and if I may believe my (experienced) guitar teacher , the guitar is very good.

Nick O---- The back and sides are Tasmanian Blackwood.
The top is King Billy pine, The neck made from Queensland maple and the fingerbord and bridge are Mulga.
Finishing was Danish oil (three times) followed by (bees)wax.
Originally fitted with normal Savarez strings , however replaced with Savarez corum high tension, which give a bit more action in the higher notes.

I am very happy with this instrument at this stage , however the challenge is to make another one at least as good , but preferably better

Allen.

That blackwood log went to a friend of mine with a mobile sawing rig.
He also promised me the best part of a three meter long 1meter diam. white ceder log. We are going to cut up the timbers ,quartersawn, and I,ll then take it home. I planned to erect a Flowersgrowing igloo in the backyard and store the timbers in there until dry or get some killndried after I buy a few tools. At first I want to buy a good bandsaw after I cleaned the shed , however I have to finish my vintage Citroen first, possibly another two months. I have got enough to do !
