Re: Strings
+1 for Elixir. I like Nanoweb Custom Light 11-52 But definitely don't buy them over the counter in Australia. There are plenty of online suppliers where you can get them for a fraction of the local price. I use Strings and Beyond. Elixirs are currently 8 sets for $US100 - plus shipping, but that is...

Re: Strings
I am a big fan of Elixir strings, EXP's are not a bad string either, not quite as smooth as Elixir but they last a similar amount of time. I will throw a cheap set of Alice or some other rubbish on for the initial setups, always bust a High E or a B string taking them on and off. Interestingly enoug...

Re: What to do?
That looks quite repairable as stated above, looks like something has fallen onto to the top rather than the guitar dropped. I would chalk it up to "Sh#t Happens!" In the scheme of things, guitars are a dime a dozen compared to lost friendships, which is where it would inevitability head if you purs...

Re: Bridge failure - how do I remove a damaged bridge??
I mask the area just like mentioned above, then i lay a small piece of wet towel over the bridge and place a hot clothes iron on it, works for me. Planing the bridge down lower will certainly result in less heat needed to remove the remainder as well.

Re: Making Radius dishes
We did a compound radius dish on our CNC just for ukuleles...10 ft rad across and 5 ft rad lengthways I found a rectangle shape works great...It dosn't have to be a circle. http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc143/shiregreenbod/PICT0001-12.jpg Hmmm! I can do that in Vectric using a 2 rail sweep, it...

Re: after laminated plates for an ES-335 style buld
The ones I am doing are all solid carved inside and out, no laminates. But the STL file I use to create the tools paths can be used to carve a contour mold as well, cheers Paul.

Re: after laminated plates for an ES-335 style buld
G'day Ray, Is it a one off or you planning on doing a few? I can help you out with a CNC'd mold if you want to go down the laminated vacuum trail yourself, I am actually building 3 all solid (CNC'd carved inside and out) versions at the moment. Cheers Paul.

Making Radius dishes
My CNC (desk top) has maximum X cutting area of just on 500mm, is that big enough for a radius dish? What is the standard size of the dish if there is one? Sandpaper disks seem to be around 24 to 25"s, Cheers Paul.

Re: Problem gluing EI Rosewood
Does anyone moisten the edges to be glued with a damp cloth just before applying the glue? Back in my furniture making days we were told to do this with white glues as the damp surface would allow the glue to penetrate deeper.

Cheers Guys, Good to hear the Blues Creek stuff is of good quality, it does look the goods, I will drop him an email. And thanks for the kind welcome too, I admire those who can bend over the pipe Al, I reckon I would end up with burnt fingers and 2 different shaped sides, did my apprentice under a ...

Sympathy For the devil?
"Please allow me to introduce myself!" I joined ANZLF in September 2011 and have made a total of 3 posts, a non active member would an accurate description I guess  , although I am active on AGGH and I see a few regulars from there who are also on here. I have been making custom built electric...

Re: feast watson prooftint stain colours no longer available
Ray I use the Feast Watson stuff myself and i know what you mean about the reduction in available colours, I have bought paint off these guys for over 20 years and I used to get a lot of dyes off them a few years back, all sorts of colours. No problems with thinner based paints, used them extensivel...

Re: King Billy / Qld Maple 00 Guitar
Awesome looking guitar, and a beautiful full sound, just lovely work all round :cl Curious though, have you ever had any drama with Gidgee fretboards moving around? I did 2 electrics and both required the fret ends re-dressed around 6 months later. The Gidgee I used had been cut and stripped out in ...
