Re: Wood Rebirthing
Some pieces I have scrounged up and put aside for something... I'm pretty sure its some Yellow Cedar ( 3@ 20mm x 140mm x 1700mm) and Silky Oak (190mm x 700mm x 40mm). The Cedar came from a window valance and the S.O from a coat rack back board, both freebies. http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh102...

Re: Calling all Adelaide Luthiers
....thanks for the interesting read even though I'm not the one building with it. You've obviously done a bit with composites over the years so your post certainly add some value! I have done a bit, yes. Mostly marine and industrial. Even though I have never built an instrument before, I am confide...

Re: Calling all Adelaide Luthiers
I chatted with him and he aimed me down the Carbon Fibre Acoustic guitar idea that i put forward to him, as it stands i think i can make a good project and product from this, the only challenge is how to make it different and marketable from Rainsong and Blackbird guitars , who also make CF acousti...

Re: Attempting a re fret.
Just adding that the height of the fret on the Yamaha is consistently lower under the E-6 string than the E-1 string. Because this is consistent, can I assume the this is something I should try and replicate with a fret dress?

Re: Attempting a re fret.
Hello folks... Thanks for all the feed back. It never occurred to me to think about a fret dress. I took some measurements of the fret heights on both this guitar and another guitar I have that plays very nicely. I have summarized the heights in the following table. The measurements are in mm. I cou...

Attempting a re fret.
Hi All, my son picked up a beater SS acoustic made by the Kiso Suzuki Violin Company for $10. Its not playable in its current condition and needs new frets. Can anyone recommend a video or a resource we can use to attempt this first time project? I have looked at a bunch of YT vid's already but have...

Wow, there is a lot of creative output across all of those instruments. Very inspiring to look at.

Re: "Falling leaves" 000 build.
Hi christian. Awesome looking stuff. Couple of questions if you don't mind. 1. Should a person get a chance to experiment with engraving machines and paua inlay, what type of glue would they use to put it together? 2. When you have your bracing in the vacuum press, what stops it from moving around o...

Re: 'Z' Poxy
At a microscopic level, solvents that flash off leave pinholes in cured resins. Even though there are 'solvented' systems to thin epoxy, there is another class of 'reactive diluents' used to lower viscosity that do not flash off like solvents but rather cure along with the resin. Whether you realize...

Re: Laser engraving machines
^^ I received a preliminary quote yesterday for a Universal brand desk top laser engraver with a 600mmx300mmx150mm bed for NZD $22k. This included everything to get up and running (except a PC and suitable graphics program) plus a one day tutorial. Probably need different bed dimensions than...

Re: 'Z' Poxy
Just talked to my friend who makes and distributes epoxy resin. Good to be refreshed on these issues. The amber color in hardeners is caused by 'impurities' in the product as a part of the manufacturing process. Over time the color can become more red, but it does not affect its strength properties....

Re: 'Z' Poxy
A pic of the Z poxy in my workshop. Note that my bottles have been sitting on the shelf for 2 years and would be out of date. That said the hardener hasnt really changed colour since the bottle was fresh. Hmmm... Last time I talked to my friend who is a major epoxy manufacturer, he said I could lea...

Re: Laser engraving machines
Hi simso. Care to share some details about the machine such as make and model etc, bed size and the Z axis range? I can't be snooping too much around our current suppliers equipment. The machine I have seen is what I would consider small with a bed size of 600mm x 400mm with a 150mm Z axis. Not sure...

Laser engraving machines
Hi. Does anyone have/use a laser engraving/cutting machine for luthier work? For our business, my wife and I have stands that I make out of wood engraved by a laser machine. In talking with the operator, they showed me some wooden items that had firstly been engraved, then a piece of sheet abalone/p...

Re: Hi. First time builder Questions.
Couple more questions if you don't mind... 1. As I have been trolling through this forum, and the web generally, looking for acoustic guitars being made, so far every build I have come across has the sides bent into a mould and held in place with what looks like rigging screws. I have come across no...

Re: Classical guitars with angled edge under forearm?
Hi Dave. ^^ that is basically what I was envisioning (except the bevel on the back). The angle on the front/side looks too steep for what I had in mind. However, interesting that someone has gone to this extent with a production guitar. Thanks for the info.

How to ID Epiphone Gibson Les Paul?
Hi. One of my students bought me a guitar that he was given on the weekend by an aunt. Its a Korean made Gibson Les Paul with a serial number on the back of the head. Any idea where on the net I could ID this guitar for manufacture date and perhaps pedigree details?
Thanks.
Thanks.

You mean like this ? http://www.anzlf.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=1633 No, not on classical guitars here true, but the construction will be more or less the same. Hope it helps. Jeremy. Thank you. Very informative. There were three different builders in that thread with this feature and all had the ang...

Re: Classical guitars with angled edge under forearm?
Hi JJ model. Very nice. So the scoop was in place of a cutaway? With the bevel, was it a 45deg? I can't quite see from your picture.JJ model wrote:I've done one with bevels and scoop.
Why did you add the bevel, and did it achieve what you intended?

Classical guitars with angled edge under forearm?
Hi. Was just wondering if anyone builds classical guitars with an angled/chamfered edge in the area where the fore arm rests on the guitar body? I have seen what appears to be add on material/wood with a shape the softens the edge, but always on a flat sound board. Would love to know the facts about...
