Re: Cole Clark repair
Had the same issue a while ago. Rattles that seemed to appear from nowhere. Spent ages doing frets, setting action, relief, everything I could think of. Seemed to disappear then come back. Humidity??? The guy loved CC guitars anyway even though he said it had been like this since new. Strange market...

Re: Arbor Press Advice
I would say the shaft will be hardened so you will probably need to find someone with a milling machine to do the holes wouldnt be expensive Dave I'd say it's not. In fact I drilled it out with a power drill. Might have even been a battery drill given the effort to get the dusty power drill out fro...

Re: CF rods and computing neck stiffness
Déjà vu. This is obviously just a math problem that can be solved with the right values for the actual materials used and some work in excel. Some homework for you Michael? Dominic, as you can see I've been doing some homework, and is why I posted these wrong specs here, that everyone used as fact....

Déjà vu. This is obviously just a math problem that can be solved with the right values for the actual materials used and some work in excel. Some homework for you Michael? I stopped using black ebonies for fretboards in favour of more stable woods and stopped using cf and now just use allied truss ...

Re: Dust Control
Yeah, I meant you need to clean or at least knock the fine dust out of the filter before each use. When you see charts of how quickly performance drops off when sucking dust you realise your 1500cfm extractor may be getting only 800cfm after only 10mins and it get worse quickly as more dust plugs up...

Hey, I use 150mm lines as the main feeds and have them placed just under bench height around the wall. I then enlarged the inlets in my machines to accept 150mm gates. Use Ys to connect to the main line, not 90 degree bends. And think about the air flow inside the table saw, you want to create a cro...

Re: The relationship between string gauge and volume?
Hey Eric, you are correct that overall design influences overall volume. So comparing the volume of one guitar to another you would look at design factors. But on a particular guitar, ceteris paribus, heaver strings are....well....heavier. After that the answer drops out from those basic formula. Ch...

Nick, there is a place that sells templates and a really good Mosrite forum http://www.mosriteforum.com/forum/index.php . One of the guys does a photo journal of building a couple. Great work, particularly watching how he carves the cool detail around the horns. I could copy out what I have and post...

Re: Gibson CS356 build
Nick, my hands are smallish with narrow fingers. But playing a bar chord or something with my wrist in the normal position I get stuck. You don't get this on a full size ES. I figure if there are frets there I may as well make them accessable or its kind of fake. If we talking about tweaking designs...

I am just finishing 2 of these. I'll get some pics up. I love the open sound. I've had one strung up for a month or so now, it has humbuckers. Sounds quite nice acoustic as well. The other one has HH S S pickups that I am winding myself. Just making face plates for the winder and off i go. One probl...

Re: Commiseration thread for those of us stuck on all this m
OK, now that you have that off your chest, try what I said. Name each set of equations something less intimidating then read the text and don't get hung up on trying to understand the equations. Most terms will have a simple geometric definition somewhere, as in, defining the slope of a line. Most i...

Re: Commiseration thread for those of us stuck on all this m
Its the way people view the equations that makes them seem either easy or near impossible. When the book says, the following expression gives us the slope of line X, just believe it and read on. Don't get too hung up on variables just yet, and read the text through. This will give you a bit more con...

At 1:50 the chick on the left grabs a pick blue tacked to the bridge before embarking on her lead break. Very tacky....and very bizarre. Hey, remember from the course, we know generally where the peaks for long, cross, and twisting should fall. Its in the book and the course material. And then move your finger hold and tapping around so you accentuate the peak that falls in that range. Light tapping I found to work best at isolating ...

Exactly Rod, you would know well how expensive it is to make an archtop guitar. So I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the price of violin wood.

Re: Violin Timber In Australia
I have been looking into making violins. The good thing about them is the wood is very cheap being so small. Around a 1/4 the price of archtop wood or even flat top wood. I've seen places where you can buy all the wood you need in high grade flamed maple and top quality spruce for around 300 bucks. ...

Hi Shane, The dowel is for the threads of the hanger bolts. I add a little epoxy when I am finished. The tenon I make is about 15mm deep. I get all the coarse thread into the tenon/heel, about 30mm. I have a jig that fits in the mortise with drill guides for the neck block. And once I am happy with ...

Re: Bolt on neck
I used the same method as for flat tops. 25mm tenon with a 12.5mm dowel half in the heel and half in the tenon. Then screw hanger screws in and I have these nice allen key cap nuts I get from Lee-Valley.

If it new cases that is even worse. Just imagine all the strange chemicals they can get away with using in China. Apart from its effects on people, those chemicals gases could impact finishes and get into the wood and make the instrument smell. I don't keep my guitars in cases but hanging in the lou...
