crazy questions
ok ive got a few questions about some of our traditions when it comes to guitar making. 1,) why do we use soft woods for a soundboard? hardwood seems to be the wood of choice for some intsruments such as a marimba, where all of the vibrating plates are hardwood? im thinking you could get a thinner l...

A few quick uke questions
I am building a uke from Tasmanian blackwood, it's nicely figured and is around 2.2 mm thick on the front and back, the sides however are also the same thickness, so my question is how thick should a uke side be ? I don't really have the means of thicknessing it very accurately as my workshop has a ...

Re: baned saw blues

Re: baned saw blues
thanks for the quick reply guys, one thing i have noticed is that the bad saw has only one bearing above the table and one below, it is not missing any, it just doesn't have them, i am possibly wondering if this could be the cause of my woes. how tight should the blade be ? is there a test or a way ...

I have recently purchased a large freestanding band saw, i am unsure of the brand but it is perhaps 20 years old and very solidly built. i am trying te resaw tops and sides for a ukelele out of some camphor i have stashed away, however my band saw seems to cut unevenly. This baffles me as i have che...

Re: Camphor Laurel inquiry
i've built an electric guitar from camphor, it seems fairly stable and easy to work with. tonewise it has a very sharp snap when the string is first hit and then it mellows out to a fairly warm midrange, but i've only built the one so i guess it probably varies alot. The fragrance is very strong, bu...

Re: I want to do what you do!
Hey I'm in a similar predicament to you, I'm year 12 and looking to get into luthiery, I reckon the best way is just to start building one .... Sofar I've built an acoustic, electric and half done a ukelele ... If you just get stuck into it it isn't actually that hard ... Plus you got a maton custom...

peizo help
Hey Ive got a peizo pickup under my tanglewoods bridge, the problem is that it picks up the two middle strings ( D and G) much too loud, and barely picks the others up at all. The guitar itself has a fairly well balanced voice, so how can i fix this ? as far as i can tell the bone nut is contacting ...
