That is just spectacular work. Inspirational for a beginner like myself to see how far a craft can be taken, and such a tasteful combination of design and execution.

Re: The Uke twins
Goodness, I've just looked up the last post I made here and it's been half a year. Time to follow up. First things first... I actually managed to finish my very first instrument! Such a great feeling. Life gets in the way of all your plans, but to make a long story short after a bout of family illne...

Re: Free AutoCAD clone for plans in dxf and dwg files
I spend my days using AutoCad. Trying to use another program would be like bouncing back and forth between left and right hand cars. Well I can see how it would make no sense to have to unlearn skills you spent years building up. In my case, I have no AutoCAD skills and I have never taken the time ...

Re: Free AutoCAD clone for plans in dxf and dwg files
Although it's intended primarily as a 3d modelling package, I have found Google SketchUp to be a great tool with a much smaller learning curve than a lot of the classic 2d and 3d modelling tools. Its intuitive approach to modelling got me up and running quickly and it is perfectly capable of doing a...

Sorry Morgan, missed this part of your message. A number of organisations are taking donations for the Christchurch earthquake relief fund. I donated via the ANZ. I believe you can donate via an ANZ branch both here and in NZ. The Salvation Army are also taking donations. A big thanks for the kind ...

Re: Nick you ok?
Christchurch is still taking quite a kicking; I'm guessing these would be full-on earthquakes rather than "aftershocks" anywhere else (how is this even decided?). Please check in Nick whenever you get the chance, hope you and your family are ok. Nick, Martin, anybody else connected to Chch - I have ...

"holographic interferometry" images of stringed instruments
Found this on the BBC... Beautiful images detailing exactly how and where soundboards vibrate using a fairly novel technique (or at least new to me). From the article: "Researchers at Cardiff University reporting at the Acoustical Society of America meeting have presented striking images of stringed...

I told him not to use Blu-Tack for the neck joint, but he insisted it would be great for easy removal if it ever needed a neck reset.

Whoa, Christian you hit the mother lode of quoins there! I must confess to having searched Trade Me when the topic originally came up but found nothing then and promptly forgot about them. Looking forward to seeing what you do with these. Top-joining assembly-line in the works perhaps?!?

Woohoo, I'm loving this build already and it hasn't even started yet. Bring it on. Don't think you'll find anyone complaining about the prime directive here.

Brilliant! I had posted my efforts of turning a rolling pin into a sander last year on a thread that got lost in the great hack, but I never took it the next stage and hooked it up to a drill.

It looks like you could build that shed out of tonewood Martin, and still have enough left over to fill it.kiwigeo wrote:The latest plan is to build a 3.2 x 2.5m garden shed so I can move some of the garden tools and machinery out of the garage and make more room for woodworking machinery.

Hi Jeremy,
Welcome! Reading your description of yourself it resonated a lot with me. I also push bits around for a living and found the best relief from this is to physically make tangible goods with your own two hands. Lutherie seems to be the perfect antidote to the IT industry

Thanks for the links John, I hadn't seen these before.
