Re: Double Bass corner restoration
Well almost impossible to say without having it in front of me and even then I could not tell you for sure, just an assumption, without view of the headstock, its similiar to a strad. Well Steve, as someone who claims to be able to do repairs on old guitars you really ought to know that in Stradivar...

Well Martin, as a geologist you probably know that Switzerland has no gold mines, no copper mines, lead mines only in its appreciated pencils, no uranium mines and no diamond mines either. We don't even have oil rigs or gas fracking sites. We only have some gas pipelines crossing the country, and of...

Re: Double Bass corner restoration
If someone owns it, its there right to do what they want with it, end of story. No, not at all "end of story"! I'll tell you something: In 2008 I was approached via an Internet forum by the owner of this guitar (here in its restored state in 2014) he discovered in 2007, and because he had seen some...

Re: Micro mesh pads
Apparently Segovia was less than complimentary about Tarrega's decision not use his nails! Takes all sorts I guess. Rumours that never could get confirmed said that Tárrega had to give up playing with nails due to a fingernail disease. If Segovia believed those rumours it would be only logical that...

OK, now tap testing makes sense (followed by tap tasting if the test result is better than not the best).Nick wrote:The beer's not the best but nevermind.

Oh, I thought the fat markers were just your taste. But as you see we have found many other "mistakes", so you maybe better ditch this one too!
Relax.

Too much white in the ebony!
But wait, just sell it as albino ebony and charge 20% more than usual.

Thank you Matthew for describing this most interesting technique. I didn't even know what van dyke brown crystals are or that they existed. It would not be you if you hadn't experimented until getting this technique down to perfection. Congrats again!

There's nothing you can do that can't be done. But maybe it's not so easy... to carry it around.

Re: Micro mesh pads
I always considered Micromesh® as too expensive to get it near my bench. In the rare cases I feel the need to polish my nails I use a leather strop with buffing compound (guess I am lucky not owning a buffing wheel  ). But as fingernails always got in the way when woodworking (and even more so ...

Re: Headstock resonance can be a problem
However, I have the spectrogram of the finished guitar before I even discovered that plucking those strings very hard was a problem, and I can of course now record another spectrogram of the fixed guitar. Like you I also believe that the "headstock and/or neck resonance" must be found somewhere amo...

Re: Headstock resonance can be a problem
Martin, To be honest, I didn't bother at all measuring or tracking down the resonance frequency that was responsible for the buzzing of the four lowest not fretted strings. I just thought "great, problem solved". :D However, I have the spectrogram of the finished guitar before I even discovered that...

Re: Headstock resonance can be a problem
Hi John, Sorry, I forgot to mention here what actually was buzzing (I only wrote it in the YT video comment). It was the string(s) that hit the second, and plucking harder also the third fret. Upon my suspicion I sprinkled a bit of bone powder (remains from nut and saddle shaping) over the first few...

Headstock resonance can be a problem
As many of us already have experienced chasing down the culprit of buzzing strings can sometimes be a bit of a challenge. This classical guitar is quite comfortable to play, but the not fretted strings 4 through 6 (G to low E string) were buzzing quite badly when played loud. I first thought it coul...

Re: First solo build - neck angle problem
There's a bit too much neck angle and every fret below the 9th sounds like the 9th. Plays fine above that but, like I guess most people, I spend a lot more time below the 9th than above it. Just place a capo at the 9th fret and you'll be fine. If this fretboard is thick enough you can tap...
