Re: Case for a Gibson L-OO
Guardian has a few cases made for the L-00 Nick Lucas. They're a bit deeper than the original L-00, but adding extra padding is easy. I've bought two of them and they were fine for what they were: ~ $100 US, sort of heavy, but not flight cases. Elderly has them here in the US, but maybe they're avai...

Re: Top slighly dipping between braces of 70s Sadao Yairi Classical
Not at all unusual for classicals built with thin tops (some are built thicker). I believe it's less common among x-brace guitars, since they're usually steel strings with much thicker tops, and as Mark mentioned, due to the braces running close to parallel to the grain. You could make a caul that m...

Very slick! Much more elegant than the old stereo reciver/laptop setup.
For my speaker, I hang it from a spring so that it gets pulled down to use.

Re: How do you design a new model?
My customers have all wanted something along the lines of an OM, L-00 or parlor, so I've only done one design from scratch. I wanted a shape with a full lower bout, and in the interest of playing comfort, a narrow upper bout and a petite waist. Using splines in a CAD program, I started with an upper...

Thank you Pat, I enjoyed meeting you and I really appreciated the opportunity use your table for a day. I had a steady steam of people who heard the instrument in the listening session very interested in falcate bracing. Even Charles Fox acknowledged in his auditorium talk that after starting to re...

Re: Cocobolo rosette nightmare
Dang! I hate it when that happens. Sorry I don't have any advice. I had that happen on one of my first guitars, using TB on my rosette where my joints weren't tight enough. It looked great for months, then the glue swelled. I still have the guitar and the problem is still there. It still plays well ...

Re: Ebony Bindings
This makes a lot of sense. I am planing a scoop style cutaway on this one with ebony featuring in the scoop so I am thinking that It would be best to match it with ebony to try and make it look seamless as possible? I wonder what the guys that do arm rests black use. Possibly they match the binding...

Re: Cases
Ameritage also has hefty discounts for builders. I was caught in a bind for a case for a proprietary shape, so I removed the side padding, went to the local fabric store, found some matching fabric and some foam. I tapered the thickness of the foam on the bandsaw and glued it in. They have adhesives...

Re: Profiling sides for a Manzer Wedge styled instrument?
Bob, Here's what I do, courtesy of Colin Symonds on the Luthier Community. Much like what jeff described. I don't know if you're using an external form, but this methods works best that way. I use a dish so I'll refer to a dish, though it could also be a flat surface if there's to be no dome. First,...

Re: Success feels so sweet
Congratulations! Triumph is sweet. Those dry solder joints can sure be a bugger. They're sometimes invisible, as was yours, Peter, and make you want to tear your hair out with their intermittence as they degrade over time. I had quite a run-in with cold joints, a bit different but with similar sympt...

I've shortened the Martin rod. It was the one-way with the aluminum u-channel. Not difficult, though yours may be different.

Visual Analyzer on a Mac
After reading past posts around these parts about an equivalent to Visual Analyzer for the Mac, I poked around and came up with this solution. Crossover, from http://www.codeweavers.com allows Visual Analyzer to run on an Intel Mac. The lowest price, without support, for Crossover is $39.95 US. I go...

Re: Work Bench
Wow! Handmade guitars and Norton Commandos! Sounds like a song Richard Thompson might write. Some folks like a narrow bench perpendicular to the main bench so there's access to three sides of the guitar, sort of like a clothes ironing board. Mine is on a reclaimed base cabinet from our kitchen remod...

Re: Coming up with a model? How did you do it?
I don't know if I qualify, but I started doodling designs long before I built my own design, probably on the order of 3 or 4 years ago. Then last year, I found myself without a commission, and enough decent wood onhand to build a guitar, so I got out my old sketches and got to work with Draftsight, ...

Re: Is the Dreadnought dead?
I like to drop in here once in a while, and just happened to spot this thread. In the US, the dread is still king in the music stores, it seems. I think it's the big American sound that sells them. Of course, in the music stores, they're compared to smaller music store guitars, so they really stand ...
