Practical degreee of accuracy thicknessing panels
After having my shop packed for 2 1/2 years due to move and new home construction, I'm finally back to dabbling in guitars. So I've been back thru the "books" and reacquainting myself with the theories and processes. I've recently been down the rabbit hole of the Excel spreadsheets, and found that f...

Just a thought... to the moderators
I thoroughly enjoy Steve's effort to record and document his "how-to's". I may be a bit presumptuous, as it would have to be done with Steve's permission, but if Steve were willing, what about creating a 'central' location for all of Steve's tutorials, perhaps in the Tutorials section? It seems that...

ELP was, is, and always will be one of my all time favorites. To me, the music they made rose to a level far beyond the bands of the era. They made Rock magic and expanded it in a way no one else has ever done.

Re: Articulated string pull
In practice though that extra lateral deviation, on top of the headstock angle does make a difference. ...... Thanks for the 'real world experience' perspective. I'm wondering though what the root cause is. Is it because the string pulls from the offset tuners are not aligned with the nut slots, wh...

Re: Articulated string pull
I am probably missing something in my understanding, so I counting on someone enlightening me. With regards to straight string pull, the pull is not really straight as the headstock is at an angle ( 15deg ?) to the nut even if from a top down view the tuners appear to be 'straight'. In 3D space the ...

IMO There are several changes afoot within the US now, and many voices are lobbying constituents to support their particular line of thinking, they make compelling arguments and yet they all disagree. impossible to summarize/analyse with any single stmt or point of view. I believe that those that ar...

Re: Braces with adjustable Youngs Modulus?
Hi again Deems Just to say that by altering the tension in the "string" of the bow you are not changing the stiffness. No dimensional change in the brace. What you will be doing is pre stressing the soundboard and possibly bending it Richard, thanks for shining a light on this, I've been thinking a...

Thanks for the Tensegrity link, I'll need to digest that a bit and see where it leads. The curve in the Falcate brace is a complication and may be prohibitive. I think you've got the concept correct

Re: Braces with adjustable Stiffness
Hi Deems Seeing as we have given another recent poster a hard time for not using the correct terms, we had better make sure you are! You are quite right, and thanks for the nudge. A better idea would be a simple bowstring truss/brace with an adjustable mid span post. A bowstring is a much better an...

Braces with adjustable Youngs Modulus?
When I was younger and more nimble, I dreamed of a way to manufacture snow skis with variable stiffness to allow for a 'soft' ski when skiing powder snow and a 'stiff' ski for hard pack and going fast. The idea was to vary the stiffness of the top skin relative to the base to alter the overall flexi...

[quote="frankfalbo" I'm just pointing out how those things don't tell the whole story of what I'm trying to say here, that my torque arrangement does things that will need to be demonstrated in a different way. That's a marketing conundrum for me, and makes for long, boring discussions with luthiers...

Re: Falbo Intension Bridge
Frank, forgive me for being obtuse but one of the things that attracted me to guitar building is the recent work that has been performed that modeled and measured the fundamental physics/mechanics that are present within a guitar in a way that can predictably prescribe much of an instruments respons...

Re: Falbo Intension Bridge
Oversimplifying: If I understand correctly, your intensioned bridge "neutralizes" the phase shifts and produces a cleaner (less muddied) sound? I'm still trying to get my head around whether these phase irregularities are material enough to affect the instrument sound. If they are material it would ...

Re: Falbo Intension Bridge
So it's Trent's first post that is correct, in that my long dipole is reduced/cancelled in favor of the monopole. With this in mind, this is where I start to talk about phase linearity and the comb filtering present within an acoustic top driven by torque. Amplitude, frequency density, and projecti...

Re: What is "Hand Made"
What if the cnc machine was hand made?? :toi Irrelevant as the CNC machine when in operation is controlled by a computer not a human hand. The program that controls the cnc was created by a Brain that transmitted electrical pulses to a HAND that typed the instructions to control the CNC. This is al...

. So thanks for the photo. Dave I should thank you, it was your comment about the 3/32" rod and the 4-40 threads that got me on to building my own. I've since replaced the Acrylic with 6061 Aluminum, I was worried the Acrylic might pick up it's own vibrations too easy, I replace the original nuts w...

Re: Another approach to the quick and dirty intonation method.
The mystery is solved! The short answer is that the temperament setting is iStrobosoft was set to Just (JMI). Equal temperament is NOT listed when you click on temperaments icon ???? you get to it via a separate CLEAR icon which clears everything else out and resets the tuner to EQUAL temperament !!...

Re: Another approach to the quick and dirty intonation method.
Thanks for the feedback Trevor. I will re-recheck the nut -12th-saddle-distances to eliminate that possibility. The initial problem was the CNC machine was out of calibration when the fretboard was cut, it is now producing resuls +/- .00x ". I'm using the iStrobosoft tuner on an ipad. I haven't cali...

Re: Another approach to the quick and dirty intonation method.
I was OK with the compensation formulas and Excel, BUT,I've had zero success in wrapping my brain cells around mathematical optimization techniques so, I thought I'd give this method a shot. I made a new neck for my 1st build after detecting an error in the CNC cut fret slots) I fashioned my own 'in...

How much time does it take you to build an Acoustic?
I am curious as to what the experience of this group is. I'm new to this, just finishing up my 2nd SS, and while I'm loving the process/s I get a bit frustrated in how long it takes me. I have learned that my "build time" is related to the skills or lack there of and the greatest part being not nece...

..... In other words can we mitigate the effect of the bridge not being in the best position with other design ideas? Dave I had a thought on this over the weekend and its a bit "off the wall" but I thought I'd throw it out for comment/feedback. The distance between the 12th and 14th fret on a 24.8...

Re: What is "Hand Made"
But aren't items made with CNC machines just copies, not originals. If you are employing some other form of intelligence to do the work, isn't that the same as buying it from a supplier. It depends where that form of intelligence comes from. If they are files that you picked up on the net and loade...

Re: What is "Hand Made"
Who cares? My personal belief is that it is a very small and diminishing portion of the population that cares about "hand made". Perhaps a better term to use is " Custom Made". It differentiates between the mass producer and the individual craftsman. When I began this journey of guitar building I st...

12 vs 14 fret neck join. What is your experience.
I'm a noobee just finishing my 2d ss falcate cutaway . I am thinking ahead to #3. And am thinking about using the same body mold (minus the cutaway) and using a 14 fret neck join. With each build The I'm trying new stuff to challenge myself and gain new skill and experience. So far it's working and ...
