Re: Queensland Maple bending problems
We have it set at 350 for the waist and 300 for the bouts. Daniel, I can't speak authoritatively as I haven't built with Queensland maple, but I"d suggest that by allowing the wood to reach 350 before beginning the bend, the wood may well have dried out completely before the bends are completed, th...

Re: Anybody else noticed?
Went onto RC Tonewoods today & two tops & a B&S set will cost US$134 to ship to NZ (sure the last shipment was only about $60 or something). Just for the heck of it, I placed a "make believe" order for the same materials from Stew-Mac and nominated NZ as the destination. DHL Express Air shipping wa...

Re: Kootenay Tonewood
Very prolific of you Dom, 30 completed Engelmann topped guitars is a mammoth effort. You must show us more of your work in future. An interesting and informative response Kim, but what did the sarcasm add to the discussion? And you're a moderator ? I was actually also wondering how Dom got to see t...

They seem pretty obvious, but here are a couple of precautions I always try to apply to my own posts (and emails too for that matter): - If you're hot under the collar at all, for whatever reason, cool down before you post. Before you click the Submit button, take a minute to review what you've writ...

Re: Video of spraying lacquer
That's what the guys down in Albany said after watching me demo a few years ago at the Tafe. Maurie was much appreciative and sends me wood every now and then, which I'm really appreciative of. Using some of his Surian right now. Glad it was a help. Sounds like a not-so-subtle hint Allen. West Aust...

Re: Video of spraying lacquer
Allen, I may not spray the same product as you, but that in no way detracts from the usefulness of this video. I naively thought I was beginning to get the hang of spraying until I watched you in action. It's back to the drawing board for me!

Re: My Latest Effort
Thanks Lillian and Richard! Richard, to reinforce the area around the soundport, I laminated two layers of veneer (black and natural maple), waited for the glue to dry then sized them to wedge between the linings (they're pretty flexible if their grain runs in the same direction). They were glued in...

Re: My Latest Effort
Thanks to everyone for the positive comments. Being a little more shallow how does it sound? Daniel, while it's shallower than some, the upper bout depth of 95mm is actually 10mm deeper than the Martin specs I have. It certainly doesn't lack for bass response, which may be due in part to the rosewoo...

My Latest Effort
This one is a gift to a musician mate in Melbourne. I'll deliver it in person next week which is the least I can do after promising it to him 18 months ago! It's been strung up for the past week and I'll carry out final adjustments to the nut, saddle and action over the weekend. It certainly hasn't ...

Re: Joining Question
I use a pretty simple jig a flat MDF base with strip of packing tape down the middle, one glued solid timber fence and a fully adjustable fence on the other edge that tensions the glue plates until dry This jig works for me - a variation on Christian's I'm guessing. The underside of the blocks is fa...

Also, if you are going to buy one of these, go to Lee Valley, you will save at least 100 bucks over Carbatec once postage is factored in Given the strong Aussie dollar, I still scratch my head when I compare local prices against the identical tools sourced from overseas. I can certainly back up Dom...

I am glad that Bob came to the rescue for you Pete! Whatever Bob is willing to part with will probably satisfy my needs for a few years. If and when it runs out, I'll be tempted to have some thrown in with an order made up of other materials. LMI, for example, usually mark their packages as "guitar...

Re: Hide Glue Blues
I'll report back after I've pleaded my case. No luck contacting the Bovine Protection Authority (AQIS), despite trying all day. It seems a forlorn hope anyway. In the meantime, I've gladly accepted Bob's kind offer of a pound or two, and must thank Kim for his generous offer as well. :cl Che...

Re: Hide Glue Blues
Bottom line, be careful of what you wish for. Bottom line, they'll stand by their decision and I'll order some of U-Beaut's pearl hide glue instead. It probably lacks the clarity, and its gram strength is an unknown, but I have to justify the purchase of that baby bottle warmer somehow! Cheers Pete

Re: Hide Glue Blues
This is crap.....I had a box of exactly the same glue opened and then resealed by AQIS. Fair enough let's have regulations to protect out country but lets apply them fairly and consistantly. Yes contest it and let us now how you go. Knowing that a lot of you guys use this stuff is the reason I'm so...
