Unbalanced veneer on headstock
Hey fellas, I'm thinking about putting a veneer on my headstock design where there is a cropped coloured plate that matches the body, and a small section where you can see the wood from the neck. As 3 tuners will sit on the coloured veneer and 3 will not be on it on the other side, is this likely to...

The big difference between amateur and pro luthiers
Okay, here's a question for the folks who have been building for a while. Well, a couple of questions actually. I'm wondering if there was a point in your guitar making careers where things seemed to click and you felt like the instruments you were making had taken the leap from backyard workshop qu...

Re: Alternative timbers and the american influence
Also, given that Qld Maple is close to mahog, is there an aussie species similar to big leaf or hard rock maple?

Re: Alternative timbers and the american influence
Interesting. Do you have any photos of your builds with Queensland Maple? Is there a vaible aussie alternative to Mahogany? I was just looking into this yesterday. If you consider QLD maple viable in terms of availability, it comes close in terms of structural properties to Honduran Mahogany. FWIW y...

Thanks Jeremy, I'm interested for sure. I'll shoot you an email!J.F. Custom wrote:Hi Simon.
I've got a bit of Rock Maple stashed away, figured and plain. Old stock I've had for over 15 years. I can check dimensions etc for anything suitable and let you know if you're really keen.
Let me know.
Cheers,
Jeremy.

Re: Rock Maple Body Blanks? Where to buy / alternate tonewoods?
As Allan pointed out, a solid maple body in that thickness would certainly have some weight in it! You could always chamber it and then add a cap either on the front or rear (ala Rickenbacker 300 series). Not sure about Oz, but rock maple is avaiable in 50mm thick boards from specialist suppliers h...

Re: Rock Maple Body Blanks? Where to buy / alternate tonewoods?
Hey thanks Allan, I might hit up Matthew's Timbre and see what they have. The guitar in that photo is very nice btw :cl it's kind of in line with what I am looking at doing. I do want to make an all maple body guitar, but I'm thinking semi-hollow - so a hogged out body with a maple carve top. Seems ...

Rock Maple Body Blanks? Where to buy / alternate tonewoods?
Hi guys,
I've been searching locally for a thick solid body blank made from Eastern Hard Rock Maple, would it be fair to say finding one locally would be next to impossible?
It would seem even finding one in the US is not as easy as it seems.

Re: Looking for pickguard material in certain colours.
Hmm, I hadn't thought of timber, but I think I'm pretty set on the plastic route, I really like the smoothness and lack of texture and it fits in a bit better with the overall aesthetic I am aiming for. Sorry i dont have any ideas for plastic, but have you thought about making a timber one? You coul...
