Re: Alder Scrounge

Cheers anyway Allan and yep I only need a bit, no use wasting a whole body. I will use something else if I need to as it will be painted but I have a bit of time so thought I'd take the long shot. Thanks Martin.

Alder Scrounge

Hey ANZLFers I am looking for a bit of what I assume is red alder, to do some patching in a Japanese Fender strat body that was made in 1985, that is I want to fill the trem hole and control cavity so something in the range of 500mm x 80mm x 25mm would do the job, I am happy to pay cash or swap for ...

I saw that and it is interesting, although I don't agree about the dying craft thing. .
Looking at the last fifty or so years I would describe it as a burgeoning craft, like nowadays you can buy a kit.

Re: Turning weeds into guitars

Nice theme. I have been working on a couple of electrics (telealike) lately with Australian made in mind so both are Aussie grown woods but one is Darwin garden weed variety of wood. The neck is a local Acacia Ariculaformis often described as a suburban weed cause it pops up everywhere. The body is ...

Re: The slow, secret death of the six string electric..

With a custom build there is a guarantee if getting something worthwhile. Not so sure that is always the case nowadays with electrics. There seems to be a burgeoning amount of "builders" around now that advertise as "Custom Guitar makers" that buy pre-made parts from overseas, assemble them, paint ...

Okay fair enough, but where is the free money?
That part of the announcement was a blatant lie designed to attract everybody's attention. Next time you're down in Adelaide hit me up for a beer :)
Cool! I'll just hop on the train.

Re: Telealike.

Cheers fellas How did you do the tiny pin striping around the guard? That is a great looking guitar. It is purfling inlaid into the book matched cap. And how do you install that neck pickup? Great question Jeff because I know the answer. No back hatches and no pickguard to remove so all the electric...

Telealike.

I posted some photos of this in the build forum at some stage so here is the finished guitar. The fancy cap is sugar gum from Pete (Curly) body is Aussie cedar with tassie oak rear cap and the neck is Aussie silver ash. I had had the idea for the faux pickguard in my head for years and finally got i...

Greenburst, all the colour is Feast Watson Prooftint in dark shellac. Satin pre cat lacquer over the shellac. Unfortunately They don't make the full colour range they used to make and that was almost the end of my blue tint.

Keep your eye on them Martin, if they run out of noggins make sure they can't see your neck blanks. I guess all that wood should insulate your bedroom well for winter.

Re: New member new build

Hi Michael, quarter sawn Aussie red cedar can be a bit hard to find but not impossible. It is mostly back sawn as cabinet makers like that cathedral look and it is quite stable so works well cut that way. There is some small millers in northern NSW that sometimes just slab it up and so the middle cu...

This has me intrigued as I phoned the Douglas Daly plantation (about a year ago) and they reckon they are about ten years off harvest. Apparently they got all there stock from the trials that were done here at Fog Dam and I have been to the trial plot (Primary Industries funded) and ten years sounds...

Re: Miratone or Wattyl Stylewood

Supply is a bit of a problem for me with Mirotone, I now buy a stocked item up here. Still a pre-cat lacquer and I buy the satin but if I need gloss I just decant the satin to a gloss. The brand is Pylon and I've never looked at the technical data but it works fine.

Re: Rosewood and CITES

I don't want to knock plantations seems like the smart thing to do really. Recently I read that when the Tiwi Islands newest plantation (Acacia mangium) was started the stock that was already on the plantation site was cleared and sold as "plantation wood" it would have been mainly some "blood wood"...

Re: Carbon fibre for fan braced flamenco

If you wan to come up at the same stiffness you did with the non CF one and just avoid creep you could make a few braces with and without then compare them. Maybe read through the section on composite bracing in the design book again that should help.
