Re: Torrefaction experiment
Hope you don't mind my late addition. Did my own experiments, started with foil wrapped wood. Eventually got to the point where I baked my wood in the oven at 385 F (195 C). No need for vacuum or protective environment as long as you have good uniformity in the oven. I have a convection oven so the ...

Re: Getting the most from these books
I just skimmed the books, will go over them in detail when I have time. The most important thing to me is the knowledge of how to change the frequency where the resonances fall and to get them in between scale tones. Would be cool to get a spreadsheet to do the figurin' for you, my Excel chops are a...

Re: Torrefied wood
Just wondering what the difference between this process and the new 'wonder' treatment that is Torrefication, is? On first flush (i.e a quick readthrough) it seems the two are identical. Could just be a trade name registering thing? Seems to be. Did not have to read any further than this. a mild py...

Could always fill up your bending test piece to find out. Could always slice it thin and laminate another wood on the inside.

I am assuming you are saying a composite (CF and wood) brace would be stiffer for the weight.Trevor Gore wrote:You could, but composite braces would be lower mass for the same stiffness.Dave M wrote:Could we use just CF reinforced resin as braces without the timber at all?

Re: Need help bending snakewood binding
For what it is worth, from my reading on bending wood I got that wood does not like to be pulled apart. More than 1% and you may start getting fractures. It does not mind being compressed. Part of the reason a back strap helps, even better if the strap is clamped to the wood or the wood. Also I used...

The more I read the more I am inclined to let the wood naturally. Mind you I have not tried a treated top. Will have to do one yet.

A question for Printer2 ; Please don't take this as a dig . It's not . No offense taken. I used to be on a forum that discussed religion, politics and other topics that get people all riled up. After a while the moderators invited me to be one of them as I did not get my nose bent out of shape when...

Re: Torrefied wood
There are three parts to wood, hemicelluloses, cellulose, and lignin. Think of lignin as the glue, cellulose as the glass fibers in fiberglass, hemicelluloses as sort of filler. Not completely accurate but good enough for a short explanation. The hemicelluloses is what is removed when torrefied tops...

Just realized I didn't list the frequencies. Hole, 95, top which I am guessing are the two peaks of 178 and 217. Ant idea what is going on there?

Re: Walnut on Walnut.
Thought I could get a better joint when using hide glue. Also when gluing the sides to the top the pieces of wood were not under any stress. I would like to work towards having the lest stress built into the guitar as possible. Whether it effects the performance of the guitar, no idea.

Walnut on Walnut.
As a side project I took some pretty much flat sawn walnut and a neck that did not work out well with the body that was built with it. Just an experiment as I did not know what it would sound like and did not want to waste wood or time on it if it turned out to be a dud. Don't know it it will surviv...

Re: Tru-oil finish; Tackiness and possible solutions
I had a neck I was doing with an old bottle of Tru-oil and it did not really want to harden. I took a cardboard box, put the neck and a 100 watt light bulb inside. Left enough of a opening that there will be some movement of air to remove any off-gassing but sealed enough to get an elevated temperat...

Re: keenovo heat blankets
I picked up a 800W blanket for doing sides and the quality looks fine as far as I can see. Would have cost 50% more to have a different manufacturer build one and have it shipped to my door.

Re: Pine Bodied Parlors
I have a jig to act as a tailpiece for the two strings (can't manage playing three yet) and it is attached by the clamps and the back block. I knew it would skew the readings but I was more concerned at finding out which resonance is coming from what part of the body and whether you could attach a b...

Would holding the box down on a solid surface with some padding take the back out of the picture? I know not ideal but not hard to do.

Decided to start a separate thread, originally posted in the Parlor thread but realized things might get out of hand and I did not want to monopolize someone's thread. I already went through writing this post but my browser crashed, have to do it all again. My machine is getting uppity about scrips....
