Thought some of the audiophiles on here might like to see the latest project on my bench.......
Been good fun - and a great geometry lesson.

Re: When is a flat top guitar not a flat top?
I'm really interested in this - i think it looks great. I am just finding my way into the world of guitar making - I've made my first as per Cumpiano's book - I've just bought the Gore-Gillet books for number two - so maybe a cylinder for number 3?! Maybe you can elaborate on your technique Nigel an...

I have never used them, so can not speak personally - but I have a designer friend who does.
They have a whole bunch of interesting stuff on their site - might be of use to some.........

Re: Buzz off.....
Wife: "what do shall we do tonight?" Me: "i don't mind really, but I thought I might just try and check out that buzz again - i'll only be 10 minutes" mmmmm I think i've sorted it. After many attempts. The grooves in the nut were fine (the right width/depth etc) - but i'd left the remaining material...

Re: Buzz off.....
i'm still at a loss. Last night I replaced all the strings, have checked the pegs and tuner heads - nothing seems to make a difference. I have the ibeam fitted - but the buzz was there before. Now i'm listening to it - maybe it does sound like a fret!? - but not sure - it's only when open. Driving m...

I've got a buzz on my newly built dreadie which is - frankly - giving me the sh*ts. It's on the d string - and only when open - so assume nut or saddle? I've put in larger gauge string to see if that helps - no joy. I've slipped some paper in the nut groove under the string - no joy. Saddle isn't lo...

Re: French polishing
Cheers Martin - kind words -and thanks for the catch up today, good to meet up and exchange thoughts. I'm certainly going to get the Gore books after talking with Martin and flicking through them. I have been reading many of the positive things that people say of the books on here - but was always s...

Thanks Rob - some great points. And thanks to everyone else too. Martin - I'll PM you next week and pop up to see you - I need to bend someones ear about the Gore books too!............ I have now got a finish that I'm really happy with. I rubbed back (and in some areas there was a lot to rub back!)...

Re: French polishing
Thanks. Martin - you are certainly right amount one thing - I'm using too much shellac - way too much, and have been relying on that amount to slide the rubber around as opposed to the oil. In fact - i'm using such a small amount of oil that there is probably hardly any to wipe off. My only thought ...

Re: What's happening in your shed?
I've really enjoyed this thread. Great to see what everyone is up to. Due to a recent op and subsequent recovery time, I've been able to start work on two guitars. Which will be number one and two for me. The first is a stewmac dreadnought kit, a prezzie given to me about a year or so ago. Part of m...

Resin marks.
Hello everyone. I have, at last, cleared some time (and my shed) and been able to continue a build that i started about a year ago. The soundboard is King Billy. It has been sitting in between two MDF boards under a pile of bricks for about a year after my last false start. When I went to get it tod...

1975 Martin D28
Hello everyone. A client of mine (by client, I mean furniture - not guitars - I still haven't made my first yet) came in to the workshop today with a 1975 Martin D28. He doesn't play it. It sits all lonely and I'm thinking of taking it off his hands. It's in great condition. He had the neck reset 4 ...

There's an app for everything.....
Hi all, I know that a lot of you do some form of black magic frequency response malarky on testing sound boards/boxes etc. I'm don't fully understand it - but I have a concept! I found this app for the iphone today - http://www.4pocketsaudio.com/product.php?p=11 I plugged my phone into my acoustic g...

Re: Planers, thicknessers, jointers, etc
I had a spiral head planer/thicknesser in the UK. It was very good. The finish cut is MUCH better than traditional knives. It is slightly quieter than knives - but not as much as (some) people say. I had mine retro fitted to a combination machine and it certainly meant that the machine was working a...
