Re: Long time no build
Thanks Pat, the undersize tang was definitely my problem with the first set of frets, it was not something I'd considered before. I made a fret bender a long time ago that looks very similar to the one you mentioned but I used sliding door rollers. I don't need any sort of drive for this one, just p...

Re: Long time no build
Nailed it Mark, I had to push it down with a fingernail over the nut to stop the buzzing but it did the job. Managed to re-file it a little and got it sorted out. So it's all done and sounding great. Thanks for the help throughout to all who contributed. Now time to finish reading the books and get ...

Re: Long time no build
Ok, I've done a quick setup on it and the saddle is a little more respectable in height above the bridge. There's a couple of rattles from the onboard pre-amp wires that I need to sort out but that shouldn't be a major issue. I do have a problem in that the open b string makes a horrible whistling s...

Re: Long time no build
Thanks for the kind words Gents, still need to work on the frets and get the action set up correctly before I can have a good play but it did sound nice when first strung up. There's a lot of potential guitars up on those wood shelves and I like to think they've just been acclimatising for the last ...

Re: Long time no build
Stringed it up today and made some noise. 20200901_180447.jpg Started off with a super tall saddle to compensate for my neck angle error but looks like I might be able to take a couple of millimetres off and still get reasonable action. It's not ideal but also not as bad as I was expecting. Below is...

Re: Saddle position
With regards to the bridge height, I normally aim for the straight edge to be just be kissing the top of the bridge. I can't quite tell what sized gap it is but anything more than say a mm is too much. Even a 1mm mil is pushing it. I have a problem with this too and I think it could be something th...

Re: Long time no build
Got hold of the books and have been reading about all the things I could've done differently on this build... Should be interesting to see how the next one compares. Anyhow, I'm up to the bit where you get to finally see the timber and forget (ignore for just a little while) the things you stuffed u...

Re: Long time no build
Cut a hole and glued the bridge on. Haven't used any onboard electronics on the previous ones so this is a bit different for me. Had mixed feelings on whether or not to go ahead with it but that was always the plan for this one so I figured I might as well stick to it. 20200819_135253.jpg 20200819_1...

Re: Long time no build
Got the bridge made up and started sanding. Looks like I might have angled the neck a little too far in the end. A straight edge from the frets to the bridge sits about 2mm above it where I was expecting it to sit just about on top of the bridge. I guess a taller saddle might sort it out but it's no...

Re: Long time no build
Cheers Mark. Got some sawdust and CA filling done on the fretboard today and refretted using the wider tang frets. Most of the damage got covered up but there's still one or two chips that I overlooked and will need to catch up with now. The frets feel much better and I think the problem is solved. ...

Re: Long time no build
Sounds good Trent, definitely a method I'll keep in mind. I did bevel the slots Martin, but today's results have shown me that I haven't done it anywhere near wide enough to be useful. I'll go a little further with the bevelling next time for sure. Along with my fret removing pliers I bought a pair ...

Re: Long time no build
It looks pretty horrible! 20200807_144524.jpg The third fret and a couple up on the soundboard are probably the worst of them. Fortunately there's really no long grain in the Lace Sheoak so the chips are mostly limited to a size that should be covered by the new frets. I've sealed them all up and se...

Re: Long time no build
That's an interesting fretting method Trent, can't say I've heard of that one before but sounds like it would solve my problem. I think I'll replace them though as I've already got the wire. Did you tint the epoxy, looks black in the syringe? I really like the soundhole inlay on that guitar of yours...

Re: Long time no build
Yeah Mark they're all loose. They actually kind of sing when I run my fingernail down the fretboard, each one plays it's own note. I've got a set of fret removing pliers on the way, should be here on Friday so I'll just take it easy till then and see how they go coming out. I did glue them in with j...

Re: Long time no build
I think you've nailed it Martin, I just went and measured the tang width on the fretwire I used and it was 0.4mm where the saw (and my usual fretwire) is 0.6mm. I'm guessing they've all got to come out, which is a real pain as the Sheoak suffered some damage when I took the two out I was using for n...

Re: Long time no build
Fretted up today and might have a bit of a problem. The frets felt sort of loose when I was filing off the ends in that I could feel them vibrating when the file ran over them, I don't remember that from last time. I also noticed that a couple of the ends were not holding down in the slots and might...

Re: Nicco's Lying-Around-Timber-o-Caster
I have a friend who has offered to do some laser cutting for inlays but I was worried that the burn marks on the edges might be visible.
I can't tell from your photo, which is a good thing, but is there any burning or black outline on your dots after they've been placed and sanded flush?

Got the fretboard glued on and the neck shaped up. Still a few areas to work on but it's fairly close to final shape now.

Re: Long time no build
Spent a couple of days working on the dovetail and got it somewhere close to where it should be. I've glued it up and I think that will be the last dovetail neck I do so it's time to get stuck into the bolt-on neck research. A heel cap of Tiger Myrtle is glued on and a tuner hole was plugged. I didn...

Re: Long time no build
Got some adjustment done on the neck angle and it's now at a position that I reckon should work out. Didn't get a chance to work on the binding gaps yet.

Re: Long time no build
I was very lucky Mark in that I tooled up for guitar building when our dollar was worth more than the US dollar. I've been woodworking for a long time but the specific tools and jigs make it a much easier process. I just made my first Stewmac order since 2010 last night and paid almost double for th...
